This panel is about a ballgame encounter: on the right, Yuknoom Took’ K’awiil, the Sacred Lord of Calakmul (Campeche), and on the left K’inich Baaknal Chahk, Sacred Lord of Toniná-Po’, who strikes the ball with his axe. It’s the year 727. We know little about the origin and rules of a ballgame.

Sorry, your argument is invalid. I've already depicted you as the Chahk and me as the water lily jaguar.
I’m obsessed with this piece of Mayan art from 600-800 CE. It looks like a modern cartoon. Just incredible. (Long description in alt text)

Xub Chahk, perhaps the last king of the previous dynasty, is recordes as being captured by another kingdom, Yaxha, on August 11th 796, and being prisoner of the kingdom of Caracol on August 16th 800.

Which might have had deflating impact on royal authority.

Chaahk (also spelled Chaac, Chac, or Chahk) is the powerful Maya god of rain, thunder, lightning, and storms. Chaahk is revered for ensuring the growth of maize and water supply. Today, we thank Chaahk for giving us with a good harvest! Do you honor any rain deities? 💧
