You need multiple backups! On a 2019 trip to the Bahamas, our chartplotter died early on. Our iPad became our primary nav system and worked well. Coming back in extreme heat, it overheated—then so did the 2nd iPad. We made landfall using a smartphone. More info here: tbgmail.theboatgalley.com/e...

I grew up sailing the Maine coast, and GPS systems are absolutely not a replacement for bouys. Not everyone on the water even today has a multi-thousand dollar chartplotter or is going to navigate on a mobile device, before even taking into account that most systems have expensive subscriptions.
