A pink lady’s slipper orchid (Cypripedium acaule) grows from the dark, leaf-strewn forest floor. The orchid has two large, ribbed, bright green oval leaves at the base, with a single leafless, fuzzy green peduncle (floral stem) rising between them. At the top of the stem, a large, drooping, pouch-shaped pink flower hangs downward, its surface covered in a network of fine magenta veins. The flower is topped by brownish-green sepals, two that spiral to either side and one that arcs over the pouch, forming a hood. The orchid is surrounded by pine needles, moss, and a few small, bright green maple saplings, with a small piece of curly lichen (a blue so pale it appears almost white) on a twig in the foreground.

All of the foliage is rain-damp and catching the light from above, giving each plant a silvery sheen. The flowers have two spiraling brownish petals to either side of and one upright spiral above the yellow pouch-like flower. Raindrops drip off the side spirals of the foreground flower. The plant has a basal rosette of big green leaves with a single prominent dark green midrib and faint parallel veins. In the center of the leaf rosette stand two peduncles (floral stems), long thin and green, each topped with a cluster of flowers. Each flower has six tepals speckled with very thin violet markings. Some are only partially open or still white or pale green buds in this photo. Pipevine (Aristolochia macrophylla) flower dangling from a vine that stretches on a mostly horizontal diagonal across half of the frame (from just below the top right corner to the center of the frame), against a soft focus brown background. The flower, in focus, is in the midground. Large soft focus leaves frame the foreground. The flower hangs from a bright green peduncle (floral stem) that looks to be a couple inches long. It is a strange flower with a yellow-ish U-shaped tube that flares in the front to a round burgundy opening framed by flared petals which are yellow striped with many thin burgundy lines. The pipe-like tube of the flower also has these burgundy stripes, but they are moderately faint compared to the saturated stripes at the front of the flower.
