Women farmers in Xochimilco and San Gregorio are restoring chinampas (high-yield island farms) using canal-mud fertiliser, biofilters and invasive-fish barriers. The program has certified 16 producers and buffers floods, cools the city and shelters the axolotl. buff.ly/0gIJjxl

Brilliant and beautiful!
The Aztecs built Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City) on a lake. They made islands called ‘chinampas’ for their agriculture.

The Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island invented rubber, selectively bred corn, and used chinampas to farm on water but you think that we didn't use boats?

The Chumash and Salish Peoples are known for their ancestral maritime knowledge. We just didn't use them in conquest.
Thank you for the clarification, although there is no evidence in the historical record that they used boats. Considering humans first developed in Africa and moved north and east.

Well, that and more than one ice age.

That’s *wonderful*!!
The Aztecs created floating gardens, or ‘chinampas’, for their agricultural needs. Tenochtitlán, the center of their empire was built on Lake Texcoco. It is now Mexico City.

Tenochtitlan had a population ~300,000 & maybe 1,000,000 in the Mexico Valley. Famines occurred regularly despite chinampas technology (look up the Famine of One Rabbit).

You are not feeding the 22 million people in Mexico City using chinampas.

Denmark, particularly in Copenhagen, has installed floating platforms/islands planted with wildflowers and native vegetation in its harbors and canals. These create safe urban habitats and sanctuaries for birds, bees, pollinators, insects, and even some aquatic life.

🇲🇽 Women in Mexico are preserving ancient Aztec ecosystems!

’Chinampas’ are island farms built thousands of years ago. A growing group of women are buying land to help preserve these rare ecosystems that are threatened by over development, tourism and pollution.

Another phenomenal panorama by Ola Apenes from the archive of the Etnografiska museet. This time from the Cerro de la Estrella, in much higher quality. It shows a network of canals, chinampas, and various towns.

The Aztecs made these in Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City, in the fifteenth century. They still have these ‘chinampas’ in the floating gardens of Xochimilco.
