This stamp is from a page of Tuberculosis ‘seals’, which were collected during the 1930s by Dr John Beal. Originating in Denmark in the early C19th, these stamps were issued at Christmas time to raise money for the prevention of TB

In the #19thCentury it was tradition for the landed gentry to provide beef or linen to the poor in their community at Christmas. Here is a list of people in Ticknall receiving beef from Sir John Harpur Crewe of Calke Abbey at Christmas 1859.
