Plants never stop moving. This is circumnutation, the spiral sway Darwin documented in 1880, revealed only through timelapse

Today is Charles Darwin’s birthday, 215 years ago!

Here’s his detailed diagram of the *circumnutation of tendrils*. 🌱🪴

Now down a rabbit hole about heliotropism, which is not covered in this book (he calls it circumnutation, which sunflower seedlings do, but movement of the flower head is a different phenomenon). #IAmWriting
This is the book, a little late for the deadline on my birdseed article, but enjoyable. It does cover all the Asteraceae, not just Helianthus––that might be a little "this could have been an article" padding, but I ain't mad. reaktionbooks.co.uk/work/sunflow...

Word of the Week: Circumnutation 🌿 The slow circular movement of growing plant stems and tendrils. It helps climbing plants find support and adjust to light. What word should we feature next?

A big thanks to Qiuran Wang who gave a talk in yesterday´s ROTO lecture series and showed her fascinating work on circumnutation in pea plants. 🌿
Thank you also to everyone who joined in and helped create a lively discussion! 🤗

For an intro bio lab years ago, I set up a variation of Darwin's cool system that used parallax and a glass plate to trace circumnutation. Amazingly clever and fun for students.
Darwin wrote 15 books documenting his exploration of nature. Although Origin of Species is the most famous, his other books are interesting and still largely relevant today. I read The Power of Movement in Plants as an undergrad and was captivated by his approach to understanding plants. 2/3

Please help our brother and sister from Gaza here to survive in this difficult situation and circumnutation that caused by 1sr4h3LL. You can donate them by click the link in the post or just retweet to spread awareness. Thank you

Always mesmerized by how IVY wraps like this with such precision, each wrap spacing is almost identical to the previous. Sometimes within a 32nd of an inch. Thanks to chatgpt, I now roughly understand it, and know what it’s called: “circumnutation.”

Scientists Say: Circumnutation
Plants are always on the move, their tips slowly waving in search of better light — a process called circumnutation.

Darwin's 'The Power of Movement in Plants' (1880) is teeming with figures. 54 in Chapter 1 alone, documenting the “circumnutation of seedlings.”

Hard to pick a favorite, but quite fond of this one—shows the “circumnutation of a very young frond, traced in darkness…”
