I interviewed him in E3 2002 in LA. My first professional gig abroad.

After spending so much time playing Civ and Civ2 in my teens, peak moment in my young career! Nice guy.

His book (Sid Meier's Memoir!) is so wholesome!

One thing I think is really interesting about the two recent star wars games is they don't feel "addictive" at all to me. They're both a lot of fun but better one of them gives me that Civ2 / Stardew Valley "just one more turn / day" permanent treadmill and I've really enjoyed shorter game sessions

yes, there is not true RNG (at least not in windows 3.1 pcs in the 90s). but the standard methods are "random enough" for casual use (games). The thing is, the creators of civ2 CHOSE to implement it this way (saving the random seed together with the data) specifically to annoy savescummers like me

The greatest game of all time was Civ2, which had a global warming mechanism. Just saying.

Anyway we were all supposed to learn this in civ2 when we realized how much resources we had to sink into Garrison units to suppress disorder rather than just adopting Democracy and using the taxes to fund more Elvises

Well if you like Civ2

SMAC really is just, what if we remade Civ2 but way better to dunk on our stupid old bosses who suck and are stupid.

What I’m getting out of this is “Civ2 forever“

Civ2 players frantically clicking that link on their desktop pcs
The city of Veii was the largest and wealthiest Etruscan city-state, but, following conquest by Rome, transformed into a smaller, seemingly less important settlement. Was Roman Veii a failure, or is there more to the story? #InternationalDayforFailure

I am the same age. Would have most of those. DOTT is such a great game.

MI, Civ2, Dungeon Keeper, Link To The Past would also get an airing.

A thing I DO kinda miss is with a lot of the games I play they've evolved over time. So like, I don't get even remotely the thrill of playing a good game of Civ2 or Simcity 2000 bc I've now experienced way more intricate and interesting systems so these are just kinda 'well I know what to do!'

Um. . . Civ2 and Civ:Call to Power were best.
Then there's Ferion, The other ones. Oh, and I wish s1 would reboot Guild of Destiny.

Put both Magic games up there as in reality Magic is an order of magnitude more than the others. Picking a single Madden is also a bit silly. MLB the Show would likely be my #10

Some have very specific warm childhood memories (FFIV in the mornings during middle school, Shining in the Darkness with my dad when he got home from work at 9pm, Civ2 sitting cross-legged on the floor all day on Christmas, AoE and Starcraft with the first boy I fell in love with)

Who could have guessed that Civ2 would lead us down such a dark path?
September 27, 2026 at 10:26 PM
You might think that Civ2 and SMAC are sorta the same and you’d be wrong. Civ2 got me interested in history, which I eventually majored in. SMAC introduced me to the concept of sophisticated sci fi, and also body horror

this sort of things start out as a fun thought experiment and then quickly become torture as you omit xyz game for abc game

Civ2 tho, Jerry. Once you play Civ2 any 4x desires one may have turn into “one more turn. Okay one more turn. Okay one more turn…”

Fuck, I forgot Civ2... What do I take out?
