it is genuinely insane how the entirety of DC has moved past this president firing the CJCS for being black and the CNO *and* Commandant of the Coast Guard for being women

The one really positive thing about Trump’s firing the CJCS and Musk and DOGE attacking the Pentagon is that it’s awesome for Canada and Greenland/Denmark

Apparently CJCS Caine is at WH, Vance en route, and Hegseth landed at Andrews within the hour.

its genuinely insane that they're firing CJCS for being black and CNO for being a woman. that is what's happening here

The two people actually running the show are CJCS and Budgets Steve

Reminder that Milley became CJCS after an interview with him
All four-star general nominees must now interview with President Trump. The goal is to "ensure they are war fighters first — not bureaucrats,” says the WH.
Some fear it could politicize the general officer corps.

The president fired probably the most qualified CJCS period because he was black

Last night's Pentagon massacre is much more than realized. Not just firing the black CJCS and first woman CNO but all the senior JAG officers and hiring a man who just joined 3 different crypto firms tied to Kushner and Thiel as Chairman. I did a deep dive into it open.substack.com/pub/fpwellma...
This is the most dangerous move yet

We believed it because, by per CJCS at today's presser, we were in on it.
March 2, 2026 at 10:14 PM
he just fired the first black cjcs

Well, this advice didn’t seem to take root. But I tried.

My biggest concern is the firing of the CJCS, the CNO and the service JAGs. No mystery there.

its not surprising but completely insane that we barely saw any pushback when this administration fired the CJCS for being black and the CNO for being a woman

Knowing about reactors in the 1950s did not make him an expert on nuclear weapons or nuclear strategy. This is the guy who during his in-brief from CJCS said "why not go to 300 nukes on subs" and left the CJCS speechless at the stupidity of that suggestion.
But please, tell me more, I love learning
Carter was trained to be the engineering officer for the USS Seawolf and did help clean up the Chalk River melt down, so I think it is fair to say that he did have *some* expertise in things nuclear. www.military.com/history/how-...
How Jimmy Carter Saved a Canadian Nuclear Reactor After a Meltdown
Before he was the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter was a nuclear power expert with the U.S. Navy.

Congressional reporter colleagues hook me up here.

Nominees for CJCS and CNO require Senate hearings and confirmation.

Are military nominations subject to filibuster? Yes, yes?

what does it tell you when Trump’s handpicked CJCS is leaking this
Breaking news: The Pentagon’s top general has cautioned President Trump from an attack on Iran, saying that shortfalls in critical munitions and a lack of support from allies will add significant risk to the operation and to U.S. personnel.
Trump’s top general foresees acute risks in an attack on Iran
Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine has cautioned that a lack of munitions and allied support could mean greater danger for U.S. troops, say people familiar with the discussions.

Caine has gotten off too easily by virtue of being in uniform. He's the CJCS and we're stuck in a costly conflict with no clear strategic end.

You can argue Trump is erratic and acts unilaterally, but the fact that he couldn't dissuade him means Caine is at best a ineffective and marginalized actor
The errors here are all strategic and there are two of them:

First, someone (Caine, it's Caine) needed to tell Trump, "if you order us to do this, we will try it, max effort, but it is impossible and we will fail to achieve it." He needed to say that *bluntly* and given the reporting, he did not.

I blame current CJCS and Kurilla, fwiw.
July 21, 2026 at 1:34 AM
i have a feeling if Kamala Harris fired a CJCS for being a cracker said CJCS would not have stayed quiet

Every senior officer serves at the pleasure of the President, but Trump and Hegseth’s firing of CJCS Chairman General Brown will reflect badly on the civilian leadership, not on the military.
February 22, 2025 at 4:20 AM
this is my immediate thoughts to the new CJCS nom
yeah i can't tell if this is (a) a Kash Patel type situation and he's bad, (b) trump just likes his name, or (c) they needed someone to bite because no one else was
February 22, 2025 at 1:11 AM
Hegseth has now fired the CJCS, CNO, CGC, Air Force CoS & Vice CoS, plus the heads of NSA and DIA. The Saturday Night Massacre looks tame by comparison.
August 23, 2025 at 12:34 AM
It definitely is a little weird CJCS and SecDef are giving press conferences every other day
March 13, 2026 at 2:55 AM
I guess, but allowing yourself to become that marginalized would also mean you suck at being the CJCS
July 23, 2026 at 11:28 PM
So what system has a CJCS that does this that also allows Biden to withdraw from Afghanistan?
