Classicists disagree

Ok, see, I think this is unfair because 'the classicists' here is basically one classicist who has their own take (and that's fine).

A lot of classicists are being really rather normal about this! I liked the movie, for instance.
A real question: were classicists acting this insane about O Brother, Where Art Thou when it came out

What... you thought us Classicists were done with Odyssey content?! OUTRAGEOUS!
This week on the #PeoplingBlog we begin our countdown to Halloween! In this continuing series we are exploring the scary things in Homer’s (and sometimes Nolan’s!) Odyssey. To kick things off, Daniel Ogden explores Book 11 —the Nekyia or the ‘Book of the Dead’: peoplingthepast.com/2026/09/25/b...

The most dangerous thing about AI chat bots is how many men with political power treat them *exactly* and unquestioningly like actual Ancient Greek oracles.

You can log on to Bluesky where the Classicists, Archaeologists, Historians, and Culture critics are all yelling at one another about The Odyssey you can log on to X where people are debating if women are "real people"

Today’s tech bros are the very textbook definition of “clever” as opposed to “smart” (or “practical wisdom” for the classicists). One could argue our entire economic model is trapped in that mode.

Worried that Emily Wilson is establishing a rockstar standard for translators that will kill future generations of classicists like Keith Richards’ tolerance killed a generation of succeeding rock stars

Since 2000, the far-right maniacs at the Manhattan Institute have longed to strip Lincoln Center down to its steel frame—and reclad it in Neoclassical drag.

Ballroom architect James C. McCrery did this proposal—and I suspect he & Trump have this in mind for the Kennedy Center.

This is cultural suicide and intellectual vandalism. In an era where humanities-illiterate tech bros have unearned god-like powers, we need historians, philosophers, ethicists, classicists more than ever.

Tumblr has a bizarre little population of esoteric fascist classicists. To their credit some of them are very good classicists. But the idea of a fascist who will correct you if you say "near eastern" instead of "West Asian" is very funny to me.
