#climate models
This past couple of days on here, it's been striking to me how little climate models are debated now compared to IAM/climate economics models.

Proponents’ own models of the Bipartisan American Accountability + Jobs Act’s climate impacts expose its epic failure to protect our climate future. At best, #BAAJA leaves U.S. emissions over 2.1 billion tons short in 2040 of even a modest climate goal.

even if AI made no errors (it won't), could reach zero climate impact (it can't), compensated people with their agreement over reselling their life's work and UBI'ed displaced careers (they won't), using local models without gov and corp mass surveillance (won't be capable enough) still: fuck this 👇
gonna go full cranky kong yammering here to say outright there has been a remarkable small beanification and mental atrophy spreading like wildfire of people who hands up feel it's impossible to do things without AI help which have been done forever before and without AI, gotta say: pretty upsetting

William Nordhaus was more critical to climate economics than Mickey Mantle was to baseball and Marilyn Monroe was to Hollywood. He died Friday, at 85.

lot of takes amounting to 'we wouldn't have been able to even begin thinking about how to solve climate change without economic models, no matter how terribly misleading they were to begin with' and i pretty strongly disagree with this

Researchers at C2SM have modernised one of the world's leading weather and climate models, boosting its speed and energy efficiency. The upgraded model is already being used for production simulations on the Alps supercomputer, helping to improve forecasts of extreme weather and climate change.
Faster climate models, accurate weather forecasts
To better predict extreme weather and climate change, computer models must evolve. Researchers from the Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) have taken an important step towards this goal by mod...

29 inches of ☔️ in 3 days? 20" in 6 hours? All par for the course in a warming climate. A warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor. The weather trigger wasn't climate-driven, but the 🌧️ accumulation was climate-enhanced. Florida living is increasingly hard. balancedweather.substack.com/p/incredible...

"We know when the #AMOC becomes critically unstable in those #climate model simulations, & it's at about 0.3C warming per dec. And we're currently at that specific level or even beyond that. For most climate models the AMOC eventually shuts down if you continue at this pace" - Dr. René van Westen

As the world speeds towards 2C of global heating, the risks of extreme weather disasters and climate tipping points are increasing fast. But current economic models used by governments and financial institutions entirely miss such shocks,
My post below notes the Nobel Prize honored such economics.

Without #ClimateChange, flood peaks in Europe from Storm Boris would have been as much as 22% lower, new models suggest in #ScienceAdvances. https://scim.ag/4itdstG
Evidence from 2024 Storm Boris indicates anthropogenic climate change amplifies floods more than extreme precipitation
Anthropogenic climate change intensifies extreme precipitation, but how it affects flood hazards remains uncertain. In September 2024, Storm Boris triggered catastrophic flooding across central Europe...

Been trying not to pay too much attention to news the past few days for reasons, but this is a huge loss. We discussed his models on a OMB working group for discount rates and the social cost of carbon.

economic models (which have a very poor record of success) to the same kind of scrutiny that climate models get, even though climate models are based on much more sound and verified principles than any economic model ever written.

We’re teaming up with Google on NeuralGCM+ for faster, more reliable climate projections.

Multimillion-dollar, 3-year funding from google.org & support from Google Research will expand our team—& we’ll open-source models & workflows. 🧵

Do the economic models for climate change account for something like, say, a full on oceanic anoxic event?

Things that aren't, strictly speaking, temperature related?

I'd go as far as "we would have known exactly how to solve climate change and likely would have done it, except for obfuscation and interference by economic models"
