🔴 A Climate Law for Polluters, Confirmed.

Europe’s new 2040 #ClimateTarget locks in loopholes, not real climate action.

Offsets, carbon removals, and review clauses won’t phase out fossil fuels — they just buy time for polluters.

💪Do you also want the EU to fight #ClimateChange?

📣Don't let politicians kill a strong 2040 European #ClimateTarget and ask them to commit to a 90% #emissions reduction by 2040 without loopholes!

Today EU #Environment ministers discuss the EU 2040 #ClimateTarget

The @EU_Commission’s proposal for a 90% emissions cut isn’t enough

Given the climate crisis and the EU's historical emissions, we must aim for #ClimateNeutrality by 2040 at the latest

Europe is in the midst a of record breaking heatwave. I’m happy with the #ClimateTarget proposal to reduce emissions 90% by 2040. It sends a strong message that the EU is willing to step up. However, the last thing we need is loopholes in this commitment.

EU komt met klimaatdoel, inclusief geitenpaadjes
Eurocommissaris Hoekstra wil in 2040 90 procent minder uitstoot dan in 1990. Over zijn plan zal maandenlang worden gediscussieerd en onderhandeld.

Next week the @ec.europa.eu will publish its 2040 #climatetarget.

The #EU must commit to a 90% net emission reductions. This must be done domestically to maintain its industrial competitiveness & global climate leadership.

🚫 No to the inclusion of “flexibilities” such as international credits!

Colombia’s 2035 #ClimateTarget sends mixed signals on ambition. While the country has reaffirmed its 2030 commitment & introduced a slightly lower emissions target for 2035, the bigger picture is concerning: progress is not keeping pace with what’s needed for a 1.5°C pathway.

Today, EU Environment ministers finally agreed on their position on the 2040 90% #climatetarget & the 2035 NDC.

But it has been significantly watered down.

The EU’s 2040 #climatetarget must be clear and ambitious!

Bellona calls on the @ec.europa.eu to:
✅ Commit to an intermediate 90% net emissions reduction target.
✅ Maintain separate targets for emission reductions and land sequestration.
✅ Introduce a third target for permanent carbon removals.

What happened today with the 2040 #ClimateTarget and the #ClimateLaw.

The urgency procedure has been postponed (last chance tomorrow) and the lead on this has been delivered to the climate deniers MEPs of the far-right.

EU is roughly on target for 55% reduction in 2030.

90% reduction by 2050 is more ambitious, and the crucially political risk is higher, but it is well feasible without retorting to any magic dust.

Where is Canada's 2035 #ClimateTarget? 🧐👀

Dec. 1 was the deadline for Ottawa to set the target. But nothing has been published yet. 🦗🦗

Canada's fair share requires an 80% emissions reduction by 2035 - so there's no time to lose.

Scrutinizing the Achievement of Climate Targets, Part II: Emerging Trends and Challenges in Implementation Litigation
This is the second of two posts exploring the evolution of climate change implementation litigation. Part I detailed how governments’ duties to monitor and meet their climate commitments, and have transparent and attainable climate plans, are well-defined by international, regional, and domestic courts. This post focuses on how implementation cases are responding to a host of new challenges from governments, from overt forms of regression to persistent failures to implement climate commitments. Against the backdrop of these developments, implementation litigation has demonstrated considerable adaptability. Recent cases point to a number of evolving trends, including the strategic use of follow-up litigation, the growing integration of human rights arguments, the expanded role of scientific evidence and monitoring, and an increasing emphasis on consistency across government decision-making. The following sections reveal how these trends are reshaping implementation litigation and enhancing its capacity to strengthen government accountability amidst changing legal and political contexts. Confronting new forms of government regression An especially concerning issue in climate litigation is the markedly overt attempts from governments to avoid responsibility for climate action through regressive measures that include weakening or erasing commitments already enshrined in law. As some acts also involve corporate climate litigation and eliminating tort liability,...
