FRONT OF A DOUBLE-REGISTER CHRISTIAN SARCOPHAGUS, 300-325 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS This marble sarcophagus front from the Catacombs of Praetextatus features two horizontal registers crowded with biblical figures in deep relief. At the centre of the upper register, a large scalloped clipeus encloses the portrait busts of a deceased husband and wife. Directly below the clipeus in the lower register stands a classically modelled, heroically nude figure of Daniel flanked by lions. The surrounding scenes depict various miracles and biblical stories, including Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. The classical rendering of Daniel and the deep undercutting demonstrate how early Christian sarcophagi maintained the aesthetic traditions and workshop techniques of classical Roman art.

SARCOPHAGUS WITH CLIPEUS AND EROTES, C. 250 CE. BATHS OF DIOCLETIAN This sarcophagus, found in Ostia in 1894, has an autumnal quality, with two Erotes carrying game, the one at left with two marsh birds, the one at right holding a hare by the hind legs. Baskets of harvested fruit stand next to them. Two Erotes on either side of the central clipeus are looking at their colleagues with the game. Between their feet are comic masks. Under the clipeus are two more birds pecking at the ground. The curious thing here is that the portrait in the clipeus has been recarved, and now shows an older boy's face, but remnants of carved hair from the original portrait suggest that the child was a young initiate of Isis.

Indeed, this is a point where I find van Wees unconvincing (he argues that hoplites, fighting side-on, are centered behind the aspis). The problem is no one fights entirely side-on outside of foil fencing.

If you want to strike with power, sometimes you are gonna bring that right foot forward.

The clearest evidence that the aspis was invented (or adapted) for shield walls is right here - the maybe 40% of its width that don't protect the shield bearer.

If the aspis was intended for open-order fighting, the wearer's forehand would likely be in a more central position on the shield's back.

SARCOPHAGUS FRONT, 210-220 CE, AND FAKE SARCOPHAGUS FRONT, 1607. PALAZZO MATTEI DI GIOVE This is fun. At top we have a relief with Erotes holding not one but three separate clipei. The two central Erotes are actually holding a heavy garland of fruit which has the clipeus wedged between its ends. The two side Erotes are aided by two tritons with double tails who support the clipei from below. The sarcophagus would be far too small to contain three bodies, and the three-clipeus design is totally aberrant. This is a fake from when the courtyard was built in around 1607. The lower, more crowded sarcophagus front shows Mars striding toward the sexy sleeping Vestal Rhea Silvia, an altogether superior work in design and execution. A bevy of other gods are all watching intently. They are in attendance because the sex act about to take place will result in the birth of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.

Love is in the air in today's #SarcophagusSaturday, as we stumble upon a huge two-person #sarcophagus in a ruined hall of the #BathsofDiocletian. Crossed #cornucopiae below the #clipeus suggest the fruitfulness of love. But the wife's face was never carved. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺
SARCOPHAGUS WITH CLIPEUS AND EROTES, C. 250-300 CE. BATHS OF DIOCLETIAN This large white Proconnesian marble sarcophagus has a simple theme: love, love, love. Against a smooth background, two mourning Erotes (or genii) are leaning on their downward-turned torches, symbols of death. Two further Erotes, on a larger scale than the other and truly chubby, occupy both sides of the front, flying with wings spread and legs kicking as if swimming. On the ground at left is a quiver, and at right a bow. The heads of the Erotes are punctuated by the short drill, giving body to their hair. The two main Erotes are looking away from the clipeus, as if in sorrow at the end of love. The husband and wife in the clipeus are shown in formal dress: he is wearing the toga contabulata, with its distinctive chest band, and she is generously built and wearing a clinging dress. But her face was never finished.

The large stone “bathtub” at the entrance to the Große Laube of Potsdam’s Roman Baths is not a 19th-century decorative imitation. It is a genuine Roman marble sarcophagus, dated to around AD 200, which was later reused as the basin for a garden water feature. Its carved relief shows centaurs, which is why it is known as the Centaur Sarcophagus. A circular clipeus on the front contains a Latin funerary inscription commemorating Aemilia Rufina; it records that the monument was commissioned by her heir, Curtia Domitia. The sarcophagus was originally made in a Roman workshop from a large marble block. Stoneworkers hollowed out the coffin, while specialist sculptors carved the elaborate relief decoration with chisels and drills. Its present “bathtub” appearance results from its later reuse: in 1833–34 it was incorporated into a water feature at the Römische Bäder. Water once flowed from a zinc cast of a flatfish over a shell and collected in the ancient sarcophagus.

The scene is ostensibly Augustus driving a chariot of Tritons. The imagery includes Tritons holding a shield with an oak wreath (thought to be the clipeus virtutis) and Victoria.

Description from Kunsthistorisches Museum: “The cameo shows Augustus, clad in a toga – the heads of the figures are all modern – viewed from the front in a chariot being pulled through the sea by Tritons. The triumphant naval victor holds a branch in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. An oak wreath is attached to the parapet of the chariot, and a shell is attached to the end of the handle. While the two middle Tritons – one holding a horn in his right, the other a dolphin in his left – each raise an arm symmetrically as if pointing at Augustus, the two outer Tritons carry the symbols of his reign in front of him: the left holds a globe, on which a shield with an oak wreath (clipeus virtutis) flanked by two ibexes, and the right shows Victoria floating on the globe. The cameo was probably created soon after 27 BCE, when Augustus was awarded the oak wreath, which - together with the ibex - was also engraved on the back of the stone in the 16th century.”
