Today I got to do something I’ve been wanting to do for many, many years: visit the supreme medieval Irish monastic site of Clonmacnoise, Co. Offaly. A dream come true. Incredibly atmospheric and serene.

Yeah, sure you can hardly tell the difference between Seamus Heaney and AI.

I love this cat with a curly tail, caught in the act of devouring its prey.

She is tucked under the north arm of the Cross of the Scriptures at Clonmacnoise, one of the finest high crosses in Ireland.

It is thought to date to the early 10th century. A meow from more than a millennia ago

The Cross of the Scriptures at Clonmacnoise bridges Christianity, Gaelic kingship & the Viking Age. Ireland’s great high were portals between visible and invisible worlds. Their blend of animal imagery, Celtic & Christian symbolism invites something mystical. #CelticArt #IrishHistory #cats #mystical

I was on a research trip today on the Meath/Cavan border &, among other things, I visited St Ciaran's Well at Castlekeeran, Co. Meath, named after the 8th-century St Ciarán of Bealach Dúin, not the more famous St Ciarán of Clonmacnoise. (Yes, I drank the water!) #MedievalSky #Spéirghorm

Outside Dublin, Clonmacnoise is amazing. It's a little out of the way but definitely worth a visit.

Newgrange is interesting and often can be done along with Tara (I'll warn you, Tara is basically just a big hill with nothing on it)

Glendalough is also really nice.

Situated close to the great monastic centre of Clonmacnoise, the early monastery of Gallen was founded as early as 492 by St Canoc.

Gallen Priory is one of the stops on our Monastic Midlands itinerary, available for Tuatha Members.
