The SS Sir Walter Scott today on Loch Katrine to the north of Glasgow. Built as a ferry and pleasure cruiser, it's the only screw-driven steamship left in Scotland.

The P/S Waverley berthed at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. Built in 1946, this is the last sea-going passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world.

Such 'knock-down' ships were produced by a number of Clyde shipyards, and while the Sir Walter Scott remained in Scotland, others were shipped to inland waterways all over the world.

This is the former Sentinal Works on Jessie Street in the Polmadie area of Glasgow, once home to the engineering firm Alley and MacLellan and the site of Glasgow's most unlikely shipyard.

In the foreground are the remains of the ramps of the old Meadowside Shipyard in Partick (last ship launched in 1935). In the distance is the titan crane of the former Barclay Curle Shipyard in Whiteinch (closed in the 1960s).

The Titan Crane was built in 1920 to lift the completed engines into ships berthed alongside the engineering works on the Clyde.

With a length of 239 feet and a 2,100 hp steam engine built by Rankin and Blackmore of Greenock turning two lateral paddles (one of which can be seen in the foreground), she's capable of travelling at up to 18 knots.
