Our favorite graphic displaying levels of wealth. We have achieved CoastFire in 2024 and working towards full financial independence by the end of 2028. That’s trying to jump 3 levels of wealth in 4 years. 📈🎯. #fire #coastfire #fi #freedom

I’d settle for a working class salary at this point (90-95k), I hit my coastfire number I just wanna grill

So over the past 30 days, for every time I bought lunch out for no reason or spent on entertainment, I had to deposit the exact same amount in my brokerage account.

... I could absolutely hit CoastFIRE by the end of 2026 if I cut that spending in half and invest 50% more than I have this month

Wtf

Now comes the surprisingly uncomfortable part:

…are you actually willing to stop saving so much?

Coast FIRE: save enough that compound growth funds retirement on its own. Then stop sprinting. Most people never calculate that number.

These are the jobs the middle classes do when they coastfire after stacking their pensions to avoid the 100k cliff edge. It’s all part of a joined up lifestyle strategy by the treasury \s

Good Q. Depends on income and expenses, but the big thing to consider:

If maxing out your 401K achieves your investing goals (e.g., will you have enough for retirement?), then it can make sense to back off investing. In FIRE terms, this is "CoastFIRE"

Fun retirement-planning fact:
Your portfolio may not actually need to pay for your entire retirement.

Social Security and pensions are money too.

Revolutionary, I know.

Coast FIRE calculators are great at producing numbers that look extremely precise.

$437,281!

Unfortunately, the answer changes quite a bit depending on your return assumptions.

Here's how much those assumptions matter:

Coast FIRE at 35, retiring at 60 on $60k/year:

3.0% real return → $716,000 needed today
3.9% → $579,000
5.0% → $443,000

A $273,000 spread from one assumption you can't verify for 25 years. That's why the calculator output isn't a finish line.

Coast FIRE: if your investments can grow to retirement on their own, you don't have to keep sprinting. You may already have enough to slow down.

Most people think parenting drains your finances.

Actually, it forced me to automate savings and build systems I'd been procrastinating on for years.

What constraint quietly improved your money habits?

😎 Coast FIRE: invest heavily early, then let compounding carry you while you only cover living costs. Steps: know your number, automate index funds, avoid lifestyle creep. (Not financial advice.)
