Incredible common name, flamboyant antennae, cockchafers truly have it all
4. Cockchafers, summer chafers, and the like.

These beetles generally loll around in the trap like they're half asleep, honestly. Adorable.

Amazing number of cockchafers around - from in and around the moth traps set last night in the Wye Valley

I had my first experience of cockchafers at dusk last night which was terrifying, but then I find out that they look like this:

Waved Umber NFY and 4 Cockchafers were the only occupants of the trap yesterday evening. Packed up at 11pm due to big moon and falling temps #teammoth

In Sweden, the grubs were purported to be a sort of climate prediction à la groundhog: with blue grubs predicting a mild winter, white a severe winter. They called it 'Bemärkelse-mask' = "the prognostic worm".

Maikâfer are called cockchafers in English - yes, one of the all-time silly ship names but also, relevant to this account, "doodlebugs".

The loud buzzing noise they make as they fly sounded like the V1's pulse jet, hence the nickname for the flying bomb.
Here's one. (German: "Maikafer." They come in all sizes, from small and delicate to HUGE and stuffed with flavored creams. (5/n)

There's several Cockchafers, or Maybugs, bumbling around the outside light sounding like mini Lancaster bombers. Bang on time!

I'm sorry these are COCKCHAFERS?!

I mustn't let May go by without a nod to my 2009 article on the discovery, during the 19th century, of same-sex copulation among Maybugs (also known as Maybeetles, cockchafers, doodlebugs). Do look out for them at it in your garden! 🌈🌳 #histsci #histbio 🗃️

Ooh last night were a shocker, real bad, 15/11 across 2 traps. Loads of insects and cockchafers but bugger all moffs 🤷🏻‍♂️
The 100th species of the year was rather nice, a Mocha. One change to a previous dates entry and a NFG, but that’s for another post #teammoth

Random memory that surfaced in the pub yesterday: The first recorded instance of homosexual sex in animals was in a group of beetles called the cockchafers.

Initial thought: This must be apocryphal as it feels too much like nominative determinism.

These couple of cockchafers are honestly the worst. Absolute insufferable hype killers. Feige should be banning them from opening their mouths.

Two nights trapping in Salthouse has been slow. It's been a cold wind with heavy showers stopping an emergence, but for a Northern moth-er it's not been without interest. Today Privet Hawk was my first for a decade, Vines Rustic is a holiday moth for me and even Cockchafers are good. #teammoth
