When I see LLMs pitched as a guaranteed productivity tool for software engineering, the is the counterweight I keep trying to get people to seriously engage with and not handwave away is the future cost, and “oh everything tech gets cheaper” isn’t an answer. Services don’t and LLMs are a service.

I don't know if I'd entirely agree that "everyone should be a coder", but I think everyone should be to modify the machine you are increasingly forced to live inside.

I’ll never understand how you can call yourself a coder if you don’t write OR understand code at all. Like if I tell a person to code something, it doesn’t make ME a coder - why would it be different if I’m telling a machine instead of a person?

So like, I finally got Python installed on my machine today, and I am not a coder. I just needed to be able to run other people’s scripts. But I also used Gemini to write me a script to do a task, and it was really easy, and accurate, and something I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own.
i think there's a kernel of truth that the benefits of LLMs have mostly accrued to spreadsheet people because spreadsheet people are the most likely early adopters of agentic LLMs

Maybe this isn't exactly what you mean, but Claude is largely responsible for my work finding its way off my personal machine and onto your screens. I've been a completely solitary hobbyist coder making art for years, but it never felt worth it to learn how to use ffmpeg or git.
