We call that coercion.

Just in: Federal court orders:

DOJ "shall not threaten state or local election officials and workers with criminal prosecution for processing or counting ballots in the 2026 election."

Also prohibits other forms of attempted intimidation, threats, coercion.

Why is the United States—despite its enormous military might—unable to defeat Iran?

In my latest for @liberalcurrents.com, I go over how and why coercion works in war and why airpower is so bad at it yet remains so appealing.

Looks a lot like some species of soft coercion or mental breakdown, tbh.

This is coercion by the richest crybabies ever to walk the earth

At risk of repeating myself, a genuinely useful product wouldn’t require so much coercion to get people to adopt it.

they don't really have an answer but they just get lost yelling at you about 'coercion' and 'state violence.'

her career is absolutely fucking toast at this point, /regardless/ of the coercion or lack thereof.

I do not think anyone deserves that kind of relationship.

I know what that “love” looks like.

It looks like religious guilt, relentless questioning, shame and the constant suggestion that who you are is something to be corrected.

Of course not every question is abuse, but coercion doesn’t become kindness because a parent calls it “concern”.

Of course it is. There are other means of coercion beyond military force.

Here's the thing: @oliviawaite.com was doing the kind of work I do, misconduct reporters do, from another angle. What are the power dynamics, how can w interrogate them, what is consent, what is coercion? In her critiques & fiction, she toiled in the same fields. To deprive her of power as a result?
November 3, 2026 at 7:27 PM
the true endgame: coercion is impossible. politics is obsolete.

"It is the highest public interest to ensure that our election workers are protected" against overreaching "threats, coercion, and intimidation" from the Trump administration, plaintiffs' lawyers continues. "It is unprecedented."

2. At the time, a spokesman for Becerra told the San Francisco Standard that Scientology was facing “the reckoning it deserves for decades of deception, abuse, and coercion” and promised that Becerra would “go after powerful institutions that prey on Californians.”

Behold. A spaniel confronting his fear of tight spaces with no coercion or stress 😎

"Coercion" implies I'm forcing you to sign the contracts, which is simply not true. Teasing you until you're inordinately huffy and ready to make dumb decisions is simply a normal and effective negotiation strategy

Hey
you,
you didn’t
do anything wrong,
you were just
hurting
and insecure
and loved the wrong
person;

I want you
to remember
this bold
beautiful
you-
unafraid
of consequence-
untouched
by control
and coercion,
you existed
and you did your
best

Seriously! I was an enthusiastic early adopter of the internet in the 1990s. There was no coercion necessary.

This has vibes of coercion and control, even before this

"Clausewitz insisted on the primacy of the political point of view: military success is only intelligible if we understand it as a tool of coercion." www.liberalcurrents.com/are-you-tire...
Are You Tired of Winning Yet?
The Trump administration has chosen to forget that airpower provides no way to force a favorable peace.

I think about this stuff in Gramscian terms. Hegemony is when you have voluntarily secured the consent of your policies from those who may not benefit from them, because they have taken on a quality of common sense

It is easier and a lot less expensive to maintain hegemony than use coercion
I’m not trying to be pollyannaish here but the administration’s capacity to pull stunts like this probably implodes if they get slaughtered today. This stuff relied on the perception of Trump’s strength - people felt like they had to to along with it.
This is such garbage! Like with my client Davey Hearn or Jim Comey, AG James, the sandwich thrower & MANY others, the Trump admin is openly abusing criminal powers for political purposes. Fed & state courts have ruled that the ballot is legal. No normal admin would be doing this on election day.

If Crystal experienced coercion than in those instances there was not consent

But this does help them with understanding IP theft, coercion, extortion, and potentially illegal business practices.
