How do we know old Antarctic ice is old? Got a few minutes?

Atmospheric argon isotope dating: a process discovered last century here at UMN (Al Nier) & perfected by scientists at Princeton (Bender).

This is COLDEX science funded by NSF and conducted in university communities nationwide.

On a personal note, I remember taking a paleoclimate class from Michael Bender nearly 20 years ago and hearing about this new Blue Ice project. This has been a long time coming and great work from the COLDEX team. (nice work @blueicedude.bsky.social!)

I interviewed a scientist in Antarctica this week, as one does.

The COLDEX project is looking for the world’s oldest ice and the history of climate change.

Spent a week in Oregon w/ Project ICE & COLDEX-Center for Oldest Ice Exploration. From holding 5,000 year old ice & seeing the gases trapped is inside, to sampling a 60,000 year old ice core (& keeping it afterward!), to seeing foraminifera fossils as climate indicators…it was an amazing week! ❤️🧊

The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a Director for Education for the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration NSF Science and Technology Center. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position. This position provides overall management of COLDEX educational programs including facilitating the logistics of programs delivered by partner institutions, working with COLDEX faculty to recruit students and post docs, leading the COLDEX research experience for undergraduates (REU) program, recruiting and supporting students and participants from diverse backgrounds, communicating with COLDEX participants about educational activities, working with the COLDEX evaluation team to track progress toward COLDEX educational goals, providing and facilitating mentorship for the COLDEX student and post doc community, and contributing to annual and other progress reports and to COLDEX meetings.
