I think this is an extremely strong contributor, with the other large factor being kids who saw the first movie so young that they - like the viewers who grew up on Adam West - didn’t process it was a straight-faced comesy
Whenever people talk about GHOSTBUSTERS like it was a mighty franchise, I’m 99.9% certain they’re actually thinking about THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS, which did some kickass worldbuilding and expanded the concept beyond a sci-fi/fantasy allegory about working class exterminators in New York.
Also, the weirdest revisionist history is watching people have to pretend TNG season 1 and THE PHANTOM MENACE were undisputed masterpieces and that GHOSTBUSTERS was a serious worldbuilding genre piece with a few jokes and not a capital-C 80s Comedy
