Everyone knows about the notoriously tight commercial real estate market in Houghton, duh..
ROLLINS: That's incorrect. There's no one in the Upper Peninsula that's getting reassigned to the East Coast

Q: There's a Forest Service office that's closing in Houghton

ROLLINS: I don't have that one in front of me. Any offices that are closing, usually it's because the rent is way too high

as far as i can tell, the high rents for commercial real estate are a real hinderance to the sustainability of restaurants and other businesses in charlottesville
The thing is it's increasingly incredibly hard to just open a successful bakery unless you own the building. That's why there's a bank on every corner in nyc now - perpetually escalating rents because of increasingly corporate owners
Now it’s like, “Sure, you opened a successful local bakery, but how are you going to turn it into a chain of bakeries so instead of baking cakes you can spend all day on Zoom calls with money jerks who don’t eat carbs?”

In whatever's left of Trump's brain, it's perpetually 1989, and the Japanese are buying up all of the commercial real estate in Manhattan.
Trump has once again questioned the US-Japan Alliance: "We defend them but they don't have to defend us...We pay hundreds of billions of dollars to defend them...We pay all the money. They don't pay anything."
[Japan pays money to support the US bases. Significantly more than other allies.]

the other thing is that if you want to help people from underrepresented gain a foothold in the business space, cheaper commercial real estate helps your subsidies go even further

i would also like to marvel for a moment at the genius of trying to pawn off the government's commercial real estate at a time when commercial real estate is struggling hard and in areas where you've just fired tens of thousands of workers
insofar as any plan exists, it is to tear the federal government apart and leave it hollowed out and toothless in ways no one alive has ever seen

There is an actual life-changing conflict between WFH being cheaper and more efficient, an entire layer of middle managers who need to have meetings to feel alive, and the commercial real estate cabal that runs all cities. It’s going to get so fucking weird.

relatedly: "why is brick and mortar retail (and commercial real estate) dying?!" then you find out literally The Mall is banning teenagers and the drug store keeps the shampoo locked up

tech bros worship Innovation and Disruption until they get a call from their commercial real estate buddies lol
paywalled article but when every study in the world shows that remote work is extremely good for most companies and then you've got stuff like this happening anyways, it's very clear that some decisions are entirely punitive for the sake of being punitive (and also commercial real estate lol)

And they have to support the commercial real estate values not just because the companies over purchased real estate, but because the executives also over invested in commercial real estate via REITs, etc.

pointless misery inducing policy that only exists because limp-dick managers can't get it up if they can't push their staff around in a physical space.

this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment

Instead, we should look to history, path dependency, institutional structures, politics, and economics. For Tokyo, I think urban planning—walkability, mixed use neighborhoods, affordable real estate—all contribute to the richer media and commercial systems that feed into culture.
