How can they control the price of computation if people have their own?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says having RAM in personal computers is a ‘terrible’ use of limited resources and that it would be better utilized in data centers

"From a global perspective it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their computer"

He’s describing an end-stage digital enclosure. No computation anywhere unless it’s on his hardware with his approval and for his enrichment.

I do believe that a very powerful mathematical computation machine can do very impressive maths, yes.

bags of meat will NEVER be able to do computation. ban these "brain" things NOW #fuckoi

it is actually more economically efficient, in terms of computation/dollars, for all the resources to be pooled in a cloud service. but that doesn't matter, because 1. that consolidates power and incentivizes tremendous abuse and 2. optimizing computation/dollars isn't optimizing human wellbeing

And yet...and yet...
The wind-tossed leaves and branches outside my window are doing a richer computation than any AI.

Our new #neuroscience collaboration, the Simons Collaboration on Brain Energetics (SCOBE), will explore how energy constraints shape neural computation: https://bit.ly/4BA7VKB

Simons Foundation Launches Collaboration To Uncover How Energy Shapes Brain Computation
The human brain carries out more complex processes than any other organ, and to do this, it needs a lot of energy — roughly 20 percent of what the body generates. However, we still don’t fully…

They're sending me to the computation camps
November 2, 2026 at 9:35 AM
Like clearly you're in here implying that this isn't just computation and therefore it's doing stuff not tractable by computation and that's why we should be fine applying it to stuff that isn't really tractable by computation. That's the point?

We're in the computation camp.
We're in the compute campus.
We're in the combination compute… screw it.
We're in hell.

Theory: code is nearly unique among all things we could train for, in that all training loops consists of computation, and in the case of coding and coding alone is also the training of computation.

Computer Science

Recommended rate: $7/hour

I need help learning theory of computation and advanced algorithms, getting Platinum USACO, getting into a top-level graduate program and writing a master's thesis, choosing a PhD advisor and PhD topic. I can meet 6 AM Eastern time.
