PlayStation for Windows (1999)

What if Sony had bought out Bleem! (like what they did with Connectix Virtual Game Station) instead of forcing them out of the market?

Thursday afternoon at 3:00 we're going to recap a Connectix QuickCam. Yup, peak recapping excitement. Sign. Anyway, hopefully this will get me somewhat closer to my #marchintosh goal of streaming from a vintage Macintosh. youtube.com/live/4t01jm6...

With soaring RAM prices, it's time to bust out Ol' Reliable.

I miss my Sound Blaster card, Connectix B&W cam, reflectors, and 3dfx Voodoo graphics card. The thrill of having to REM out statements in my Autoexec.bat and Config.sys just to get some games to work. It was the golden age and I love that I grew up in that era.

Connectix Virtual Game Station, MacAlly controller; he’s playing Bonk up to the point where there’s a snow level and it stops working
he’s playing stardew

You ever get the feeling people conflate Emulation being legal with the ROMs being legal too? Getting ROMs has always been in a legal gray area, while the Emulators themselves have been legal ever since Connectix won a lawsuit against Sony over the Virtual Game Station

By the way I use the example of Sony specifically because of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. v Connectix Corp. Even though Connectix ultimately won the Ninth Circuit appeal, the injunctions and litigation costs resulted in them going bankrupt by 2003.

Sony bought the emulation IP they'd sued over.

If I’m going to do video, I’m going to commit to the bit.

Anyway, some thoughts on what I want out of @tedium.co in 2026. I shot this with a Connectix QuickCam. (No I didn’t.)

Connectix Virtual Game Station and Bleem were both contemporary with the PlayStation. Neither lost the cases Sony brought against them; Connectix even won theirs outright. But both were bullied out of the market by the oppressiveness of the legal action (injunctions, legal fees, etc.).

Everyone mentions the Bleem & Connectix lawsuit and how Sony lost both of them, but everyone fails to mention the DMCA laws regarding security and DRM circumvention and how that's just objectively a major part of consoles since Wii, 360 and PS3.

Also can add Rayman to the list of games I've emulated on multiple platforms. My first experience with Rayman was emulating the PS1 release in Connectix Virtual GameStation back in 1998.

New month, new pfp. A return of my first webcam selfie from the mid-90s (Connectix QuickCam).

Heh, kudos to Black Mirror S7E4 for actually sourcing a Connectix QuickCam. I'm sure it would have been easier to find a later Logitech-branded one, but that wouldn't have been accurate to the timeframe (1994).

I think a better analogy would be emulators. You're accomplishing the same output using a totally different means.

That's why IMO the 9th Circ Sony v Connectix case is relevant to genAIs

Looks like a Connectix/Logitech QuickCam color. The branding was on the base it would sit on.
