Nancy and Ronnie tried this with stuff from the CA Governor's Mansion. After months of asking the conservators sent them the bill for the insurance on the objects. They were returned rather quickly.

When I was learning about textile conservation the conservators groaned about people bleaching old white dresses because it basically destroys them. They just fall to bits over time.
