The article, published by Maryland Matters on September 17, 2026, discusses concerns about foreign influence and the impact of dark money on American democracy. The author, a veteran, argues that the nation's elected officials are increasingly propped up by foreign countries and shadow entities, turning the United States into a puppet nation rather than a sovereign one. The piece emphasizes the importance of civic engagement, particularly among veterans, to defend the Constitution against corruption and foreign interference. The author references historical figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who warned about the dangers of foreign influence on republican government. The article highlights the Ipsos Poll showing that Americans across political spectrums agree that campaign spending should be regulated, with many supporting a constitutional amendment to restore Congress's power to regulate election money. The For Our Freedom Amendment, championed by American Promise, is presented as a solution to overturn the Supreme Court's rulings in Buckley v. Valeo (1976) and Citizens United (2010), which equated unlimited campaign spending with free speech. The author stresses that veterans, having taken an oath to defend the Constitution, have a moral obligation to demand a higher standard in governance and to ensure that the nation is not run by the highest bidder. The piece concludes with a call to action for veterans to actively participate in politics to protect American democracy from being undermined by billionaire donors and foreign interests.
