I was sad so I went to the native plant nursery and got more plants to add to my pikmin level. The coontie absolutely looks like a gamecube asset

More Atala #butterflies on the way! (Eumaeus atala) I counted 18 #caterpillars on one small coontie plant (Zamia integrifolia) this morning. It’s almost totally defoliated now, but that’s why I grow them. More leaves will come out before too long. 🌱 #MyGarden #Insects #Cycads

#MacroMonday Atala #Butterfly south #Florida was once thought extinct due to significant loss of its host plant, Coontie. A true gem of our local ecosystem! #insect #nature #naturephotography

Like all #cycads, the coontie, Florida’s only native cycad, has separate male and female plants. Cycads have cones instead of flowers. On the left is a 9cm female coontie cone, with a pollen-laden 15cm male cone on the rt. Beetles and other insects are the pollinators. (See Alt) 🌱 #Plants #MyGarden

Everyday I am more amazed. They will be going into their cocoons any time now. 🌱🦋

The Atala #butterfly (Eumaeus atala) is one of the joys of living in South Florida. Once thought to be extinct, it has made a comeback in part due to gardeners planting its only host plant, the coontie (Zamia integrifolia). Here are the 4 life stages: eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adult. 🌱

My Atala butterflies have become prolific. ☺️

I have 3 coontie plants (the sole host plant, and native to South Florida, for the Atala butterfly) covered with caterpillars. This is my 3rd “clutch” since January and previously they only showed up each June.

Stock photo of a Coontie palm (Zamia pumila) as mine lost all its fronds during the January freeze. The seed pods resemble slender pine cones, sort of. When cut in half, the resulting seed distribution is fascinating.

The atala butterfly, once thought to be extinct, is now back in #Florida and thriving. Climate change may allow it to expand its territory www.news-press.com/story/news/e... via @kmillerweather.bsky.social
A Florida butterfly was thought extinct. Now it's thriving | Exclusive
Garden plantings of native coontie helped fuel a quiet rebound, with sightings now spreading north and peaking in Florida’s summer months.

Coontie seeds are wild & I love them.

I went to check on the plants I secretly planted by the dumpster. One pawpaw died but the other looks quite happy! Baby coontie is also still chugging along and Wild Lime is COVERED in baby wormies. Maybe too many wormies. I took two wormies to add to my existing wormy production system at the house

The archaeological consensus is that there is no evidence of contact between the Bahamian Lucayan Taino and the people of Florida.

Botanists, meanwhile, are sure that coontie (Zamia integrifolia) was introduced to Florida from the Bahamas by people
do you ever think about how sweet potatoes left South America well before 1492?

Coontie (Zamia integrifolia), a cycad native to Florida has an interesting history. Despite the toxins, the fat underground stems were used by indigenous peoples to produce a starch. Later, it was over-harvested to make Animal Crackers.
