Hatertse Vennen 01 - 2012

Childhood memories of the Hatertse Vennen brought back in pastel. 🌿 Playing with light, shadow, hatched strokes to capture the dapple of light through the trees.

South of Nijmegen The Hatertse Vennen (Hatert Meres) is nature reserve where I came often when I was a young child. South of Nijmegen it is a place full of little meres, heather and forests. Because it was a long time ago since my last visit me and my dad went out for a stroll. Surprisingly I liked what they had done to the place. New insights in forest management delivered less dense woods and more spatiousness. They cut down the surplus of trees in order to have the original landscape reappear, such as heather and dunes. Finally I could see there were much more little ponds than I thought I knew. Style Obviously I like painting and sketching trees as you can tell by the abundance of landscapes I did in the past. Their baroque appearances never cease to inspire me. Perhaps I like them second to women who are less baroque but equally beautiful. For some reason I like to do pastel landscapes in my hatched strokes style. The blurry result I find more attractive than to delineate forms drawing them in the direction of those forms. Surely impressionism is a word that comes to mind naturally. I could not name the style differently. The technique of using colors is derived from pointillism and is called divisionism. See my pastel drawing ‘Meyendel 10-02-15’ for an explanation. Later Photo Due to the backlighting the original photo I took of this pastel was too dark. Since I bought my Canon D90 with a better lens I am able to catch more subtle shifts in color. That is why I took a new photo in 2021 so I also could post a better picture and printable. Distinguished Lady This graphite pencil drawing ‘Louise Brooks – 2026-06-01’ is inspired mainly by the dress Louise wears. Soft gradients meeting hard lines. Since completing my last oil painting ‘In Hoc Signo’, I’m free to move on to new projects. For some time now I had this incredible photo of her in a shiny dress, sitting on a couch. The way she crosses her legs reminds me to Queen Elizabeth II doing the same. In an elegant way only distinguished ladies, aware of their status, can. Compositional Challenges There was only problem: her first husband. On the picture he is standing next to her, with a cigarette bud between his fingers. Not exactly the ideal composition, save for her pose. That’s why I changed quite a few things. First, get rid of her husband. Next thing that I wanted to change was her hand resting in her lap. The foreshortened look of her arm and hand felt uncomfortable and clumpy. Now I set her loose of her (first) husband I could move her arm freely. Let it rest on the backrest of the sofa, which I lowered to enable her doing so. The ideal Composition This way I achieved the ideal compostion. Her body was at rest, but her arms, legs, and torso were beautifully arranged in horizontal, vertical, and slanted alignments. More dynamic than last time I drew her. Basic idea though: the soft structures and hard lines combined. Last but not least, I kept the lighting quite light, following the reference picture basically. Perhaps out of fear a darker couch and floor would eat up her posture. Instead, I had her dress shimmer in all its glory. Personally, I like the linear structures around her legs most. They put the stress on what attracted me in the picture initially. Graphite pencil drawing on Talens Bristol paper (21 x 29.7 x 0.1 cm - A4 format) Artist: Corné Akkers

Many Poses Part of the roundism series. My last graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 28-04-17’ had a rather odd-looking wobly appearance. Intriguing in its own right but as to the next one I had something different in mind. My regular model has many different poses to offer. Most of then are artistic of nature. Explicitness is another quality. However, when it comes to posing for art works I have no need for it. Such themes are not in popular demand. This having said, sometimes I am intrigued by the idea to include genitals. Why not, because after all they are just another body part, right? Could I have her posed with her legs slightly opened but still create art, not porn? And if in this respect my aim was meant to be true artistically, would people still get it? Explicite or Not? Whilst drawing, tossing and turning the solution presented itself in some sort of way. The pose was quite explicite but abstracted it looses its erotic connotation and artistic value takes over from then. It is one of those aspects to enjoy. I work with models for a very long time. What is needed is a mutual respect with, yes, sometimes a flirt, but always a keen eye on art creation. Besides that, it is more fun to portray the beauty of a woman in all her qualities. Thus the spectator will keep on looking in stead of be exhausted on a sexual whim. Squares and Round Forms I was fascinated by the squares and round forms I detected in the body. I had some vague idea about quarters of circles, inspired by my model’s beautifully shaped buttocks. Moreover, I was forced to to use them anyway because of the horizontal structures at the lower left side. It turned out to a charming archetype kind of cubist drawing that way.
