Many Poses Part of the roundism series. My last graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 28-04-17’ had a rather odd-looking wobly appearance. Intriguing in its own right but as to the next one I had something different in mind. My regular model has many different poses to offer. Most of then are artistic of nature. Explicitness is another quality. However, when it comes to posing for art works I have no need for it. Such themes are not in popular demand. This having said, sometimes I am intrigued by the idea to include genitals. Why not, because after all they are just another body part, right? Could I have her posed with her legs slightly opened but still create art, not porn? And if in this respect my aim was meant to be true artistically, would people still get it? Explicite or Not? Whilst drawing, tossing and turning the solution presented itself in some sort of way. The pose was quite explicite but abstracted it looses its erotic connotation and artistic value takes over from then. It is one of those aspects to enjoy. I work with models for a very long time. What is needed is a mutual respect with, yes, sometimes a flirt, but always a keen eye on art creation. Besides that, it is more fun to portray the beauty of a woman in all her qualities. Thus the spectator will keep on looking in stead of be exhausted on a sexual whim. Squares and Round Forms I was fascinated by the squares and round forms I detected in the body. I had some vague idea about quarters of circles, inspired by my model’s beautifully shaped buttocks. Moreover, I was forced to to use them anyway because of the horizontal structures at the lower left side. It turned out to a charming archetype kind of cubist drawing that way.

A New Where Rounds Drift This soft pastel ‘Where Rounds Drift – 28-04-26’ is a natural follow-up to my colored pencil drawing under the same name. Perhaps yet another significant evolution in my personal artistic journey. This one is also a logic resident of my Neo Deco / Roundism pantheon. However, I wanted to create something new as well. Could this one be born out of sheer boredom? Let me explain. Yesterday it was King’s Day in The Netherlands. Traditionally that’s a feast for people to sit on quilts, selling their second hand stuff on the streets. Not for me though, flea markets are not for me. However, few people showed up in my Monday art class, basically taking a day off. This leaves me with only a few of them and some spare time to draw myself during those classes. A Quick Draw from the Hip Being still captivated by my In Hoc Signo project I thought of a quick draw from the hip. That would be a pastel shot. I could only think of one thing I would like to do and that the elaboration of aforementioned coloured pencil piece. Then I remembered how much fun it was to do an earlier pastel ‘Free Floating Blue Wave Nude – 10-02-21’. The challenge was to capture both the familiar atmosphere of the pencil drawing and this pastel’s style. Both pieces capture a serene sense of weightlessness and surely I wanted to reach for the same in a new pastel. A Fractured Play of Light Capturing forms came easy, also given the fact I caught hem before only two weeks ago. The color scheme: same thing. Not much of a problem because I simply used the same as employed in the Free Floating pastel. However, as stated above, I was in for something new. Something that could be an addition to my already existing artistic paradigma. Why not cut those waves and forms open by having diagonal beams of light run through them. Consequently, they create a beautifully fractured pattern across the skin, creating new form altogether. Obviously I didn’t want to loose the recognizability.

Solarized Geometry This graphite pencil drawing ‘Solarized Geometry – 10-09-20’ let surrealism meet cubism. After my drawing Roundism – 29-08-20 it was time to delve into this type of solarized geometry. The latter is about properties of space that are related with distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures. The square, triangle and circle in the upper left corner are a reminder that whatever complex form we might see it is build up from simple geometrical sub-forms. As such, this is an old principle every art student at art school before the World War II was trained in, when students actually still learned something of value. Ambiguous Image? Through the process of solarization I found these abstract forms derived from the female body that I could use to abstract. But only a little bit, just to have the spectator interpret and acknowledge them both at the same time. Moreover, I thought it was fun to see if something worked. Now, I’m talking about the principle of an ambiguous image. Followers of my work know what I’m talking about. In short, it’s how the mind can discover two images in one at the same time. Simply wondering if it works the same way with geometry and body shapes. Why wouldn’t it. After all, those are just forms, whether they represent a meaning initially or in abstract form create a new one. Further Abstraction Perhaps I can take the abstraction into solarized geometrical forms even further. This might bring me something ‘post-roundism’ because I think the style feels a little exhausted for the time being. Perhaps I will work out some oil paintings based after these roundism drawings. Time to move on. Got any ideas? Graphite pencil drawing (Sakura 0.5 mm, Pentel 4B) on Winsor & Newton paper (29.7 x 21 0.1 cm) - A4 format) Artist: Corné Akkers

Catherine Deneuve Another one in the Sans Titre series. The last one was my graphite pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre – 30-03—18’, depicing Marilyn Monroe. When I saw a picture of a young Catherine Deneuve I immediately saw the potential for my roundism style. For those who don’t know much about her I would like to say: go see ‘Repulsion’. Your life never will be the same. Roman Polinski and she imprinted a hefty image on my mind, that’s for sure. Even though this movie set her reputation as a cool and reserved beauty, she also played more cheerful roles. Anyway, I like her a lot in french movies and well, french movies in general. Cool Distant Look The challenge was to capture the cool distant look in geometrical forms, linking cubism to realism and impressionism. Perhaps you also can call it surrealism. I don’t know, that is not for me to judge. Anyway the strong tonal bandwith in the picture fortunately offered the opportunity to capture lots of light and dark plains. Combined they induce a recognizabe facial expression. Even more, they enforce her state of mind. Diagonals The diagonal beams on the left serve as a counterbalance of the vertical position of the head. They bounce straight into the vertical border to the right of her right eye. Then the eye is guided downwards and then diagonally upwads to the left. It also gives dynamics to her sullen look, like she is contemplating a crime. Her hair band somehow unifies the general composition and I put the stress on that one a little bit more. That is why its top section is flowing into the tonal regions in the negative space.

Color Theoretical Challenges This oil painting ‘Neo Deco – 10-07-25’ demonstrates everything I know about color theory. In fact, it’s a search to converge all 6 main colours of the color wheel into a majestic scenery. A tall order you might say and I do agree. Didn’t the great Raphael once proclaim to only use a maximum of 5 main colors at the same time? Well, to some extent I do agree. The use of too many colors can lead to screamy kitsch. Almost as if Bob Ross would have set to work his palette with all colors of the rainbow on it. Therefor, using all six of them seems like wanting to have a taste of the forbidden fruit. However, in the past I already used all 6 before such as in my oil painting ‘Nina – 12-10-23’. The reason my inner urge directed me to used them all once more I will explain below. A Big Gordian Knot It all began with my graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 05-07-16’ which I sold very quickly after its completion. For years I had this on my to do list of oils yet to start. I always thought of it to be a great cubist concept. Successfully merging cubistic body parts I knew this also held the potential of a grand painting. Somehow I had this concept of matching this mergance to the use of colours as well. Almost as if one would look at a display of mother of pearl-like colors. As stated above, a tall order and a big Gordian Knot. This time not one Alexander The Great would solve by simply cutting through it. Soon I found myself in big trouble because all colours were screaming at me in full force. both in the positive and the negative space. The Solution Consequently, this time the forms, composition and proportions weren’t the problem. Those have been sorted out by the prestudy in graphite pencil. For 95% of the time I have suffered because I was constantly looking at a big candy box full of screamy colors. Even though I tuned down many of the color saturation into more subdued colours the solution arrived only today.

Gjon Mili’s Inspirational Influence This oil painting ‘Neo Deco – 07-05-25’ is an elaboration of a recent graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 10-03-25’. Homage to Albanian photographer Gjon Mili. Last oil painting was from August 2024 so it was high time for a new one. In addition, I always have considered my drawings as prestudies for future oils to come. Now I come to think of it I have so many drawings that to my opinion are good enough to transfer to oil paint. If I only had enough time before time will catch up with me. Maybe I should paint more this year. Perhaps some outdoor sketching. Well, I don’t know really. The artistic wind may carry me to unknown destinations. 6 Main Colors Anyway, using your own drawing as reference is always a comforting thing. The composition is something to simply take over and then …? Sheer copying is out of the question. Therefor, the most natural inclination is to delve right into the realm of colors. There is true value added! And so I did but I have to confess something. Oh Lord, forgive me for I have sinned. Against the magic rule of max 5 colors according to Raphael’s law. In fact, I used them all (6) in this painting. Hence, it took me quite some time to complete this one. Once you set forth to use a complex color palette you know troubles are bound. Backlighted Initially I was in awe with the sheer beauty of the dress. Especially the backlight that turned the scenery into a spectacular tonal vision. For me that’s meat for the beast so I the drawing was finished quickly and with gusto. Now I come to think of it, that was the very reason I used all six main colours. That is, to depict the effect light has when it permiates through structures. You may say the colors I used have got nothing to do with reality or does it? In fact, you might be wrong. Light has the tendency to break up into the full colour spectrum of a rainbow. Furthermore, I strived for a perfect balance between cool and warm, and complementary colors.

Natte Beek This graphite pencil drawing ‘Beek – 14-04-25’ depicts a slighty cubist interpretation of an eponymous landscape. There’s this house called the ‘Natte Beek’ (‘Wet Rivulet’) which is funny. All rivulets, creeks or waters in general are wet, aren’t they? This actual spot is very well known to locals because it is a striking scenery. When you pass it via the Rijksstraatweg you’ll easily spot it. That’s because it is situated in an open field in the bushy hills of Beek. Many times I have seen it with childish curiosity sitting in a bus towards my grandmother in the Ooij. Especially in winter it looks like a gothic fairytale, looking forelorn in the woods. In summer it looks less threatening when meadows are all green. Spring has arrived and my outdoors sketching inclinations are growing. Therefor I thought it would be a good start using this spot as artistic motif. Paper Strucure Quite a while now since I made a last landscape really. My last one of Beek showed the old and the new Bartholomeuskerk in a cubistic approach. This time I had it in me to combine impressionism with cubism. This feeling appeared to exactly match the presupposition I had with regard to this Hahnemühle Bamboo sketch paper. Rather grainy of structure reacting to my pencil made me think of Ingres paper of the same brand. It happened to be that my soft 14B pencil scratched across the paper like a knife cuts through soft butter. Even rubbed out with a stump the structures still looked broken and open. Very likeable indeed I must say even though a bit too grainy without using a stump. Slightly Cubistic The goal was to implement cubist styling only subtlely. The treeline in the back for example is drawn more abstractly than it lets on initially. The hedge in front of the house has a split halfway. A deliberate addition from my part according to the principle of singularity. The tree in the front to the left was nothing but fun to draw. Very rewarding and satisfying to erase this dots.

My Favorite Spot This graphite pencil drawing ‘Berg en Dal – 21-04-25’ is my next landscape endeavour after the previous one, called ‘Beek – 14-04-25’. Cubism meets impressionism once more. The title is a bit arbitrary because I think it might also be part of Beek. Ubbergen, Berg en Dal, Groesbeek, Beek and even Ooij are all part now of the bigger municipality Berg en Dal. Therefor it doesn’t matter really. Since I gave a couple of drawings and pastels the same title I think it’s fair enough. They are made in the same area as this one, which offers a view on the Boterberg positioned to the left. In fact ‘Berg en Dal – 25-10-23’ is a vista on hill in the center to the right. This must be my favorite spot. Probably since 1980 when I visited it for the first time with my parents. Not Fully in Leaf Yet The reference photo I took some weeks ago when the trees were not in leaf yet. Only some pines on the Boterberg show some darker leafy planes. Even though there weren’t many leaves yet, tree branches show subtle bifuractions. Especially when the outer ends already show buds their outlines tend to appear as beautiful bulged structures. Certainly, similar to abstract geometric shapes and I simply love those. When trees are fully in leaf often they block the view too much. You simply can’t suggest depth between trees too much anymore. My aim though was to depict the structures of the hilly slopes and treescapes altogether. So was right on time. Sketchy Feel This having said, the lighting of course is the key factor but it needed more. The previous one was made both cubist and impressionist. However, my roundism adventures are still in my fingers but I kept an early drawing ‘Valley of the Philosophers - 20-10-15’ in mind. Quite abstracted that one was. So executed this one in geometric shapes but also took care of maintaining a sketchy feel. Surely I was avoiding overproducing it, keeping the essential message of impressionism in mind.

A Mixture of Cubism & Surrealism This graphite pencil drawing ‘The Hague Forest - 21-06-18’ is a mixture of cubism, roundism and surrealism. After Roundism 12-06-18 I wanted something different. Nothing more boring than to do the same kind of motif over and over again. It’s not the first time I tried out such a mixture. Perhaps you remember a previous drawing called ‘Strange Goings on at ‘t Meertje - 10-02-16 (Sold)’. That may have been the first attempt to employ such a combination of styles. Now I felt it was about time to try it out again and see what may stem from my pencil. You see, there was a special event that inspired me to do so. Just Around The Corner Normally, riding my bike through The Hague Forest (Haagse Bos) just around the corner I see only beauty. On a sunny day and in season it usually is a leafy light and shadow play. But one time I happened to bike through it at 3 AM in the dead of night. You see, I was coming from a party in Benoordenhout. The shortest yet the creepiest way back home was through this forest with no street lights at all. Wouldn’t you just love the challenge of overcoming deep fears for the darkness in such woods? Then I came across the central lake in the forest and creatures big and small came out. I tried to capture this feel during daytime. A Forest As such, a forest is a archetype for all our fears. Because behind every tree perverts, notorious highwaymen and other strange folks can dwell. So you better be aware. However, it is not as freightful as you think once your eyes get acclimated or is it? Strangely, after a while I felt quite comfortable once my eyes got adapted. Then I saw the sheer beauty of it all. My fears were gone.

Too Realistic? This graphite pencil drawing ‘Nude - 06-04-16’ is a rather realistic looking nude of my favourite model. However, she was subject to a certain degree of styling according to my principles of roundism. Unlike the previous one, called ‘Nude - 01-04-16’ though, I must admit. In fact, far a bit less but more than the one before that, called ‘nude - 25-03-16’. It was my very aim to try out three different levels of abstraction in a row. Sometimes such intentions turn out just very fine. Often they don’t and that’s fine too. An artist is also in need of getting unexpected results. Those are the greatest ones and for that matter conducive to artistic growth. A Bit Too Realistic? The drawing at hand turned a bit more realistic than I intented it to let on. No worries though but a bit of a surprise really. Strange to see how I grew into being capable of getting a realistic result. Maybe a bit too crafty. What do you think? It makes me think of an old saying that during the process of creating artists are in great uncertainty. After completion the big doubt begins. Razor Light Enough doubt expressed for now. What initially attracted me was the razor light from the right. It centralizes the focus into some kind of blunt ‘V’ in the middle of the drawing. Especially the upper leg / inner thy causes this triangular shape to appear. To my opinion it creates a bit of needed dynamics. The pose otherwise could have appear to be a bit to dull. I’m always on the look for contrasts like these. These contrasts could be colorwise, light and dark or even thematically.

#roundism
Solarization This graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 19-08-20’ is walk down the path of Man Ray’s solarization and combination with cubism. It is also called ‘the Sabbatier Effect’. Solarization became an important part of his oevre. Legend has it that one time his model Lee Miller entered Man Ray’s darkroom. She overexposed a photo he was developing. After his first rage he came to his senses and saw it created beautiful, somehow surrealist effects. Upon my word, how great inventions can be spawned by the biggest of mistakes. My Own Attempts I did a couple of pastels on Man Ray some 8 years back. Recently I made some, like Roundism – 27-04-20, Clara – 24-04-20, Roundism - 31-03-20, Roundism 29-03-20 and Roundism – 04-04-20. This drawing however differs from the previous ones. There are only straight cubist plains, no roundish forms. In fact it’s a bit of a joke really because there are no roundish forms included this time. However, to keep up with my Roundism formula it’s included in the series under the same name. Composition Basically the model was reclining on my bedside. Her body position looked very straight with only two main diagonals: in the arm and the thigh. Overall composition I tried to improved a bit. I added dark blocks in the lower right corner and in the upper left. Next tot his, I also put a diagonal fold in the mid-section to the right. Also some loose folds to the left so the arm would not float too much. It’s about solarization and not surrealism, even though the first often is considered to be part of the latter. All-in all It has become a kind of cross-over of styles from the past. Time will tell what ways I will turn to. Perhaps adding color?

Gene Tierney One of the 'Sans Titre' Series after the moviestar and celebrity Gene Tierney in the roundism style. The depiction of the facial features is based on chiaroscuro principles. Notheless I am surprized this one turned out to show hints of art deco as well. Surely that has something to do with the reference picture. Back in the day photographers knew their trade. I like this kind of photography much better than its contemporary counterpart. Besides that, black and white seems to do these fine ladies more just. Poured into Concrete I tried to let the portrait breathe by keeping some parts in the positive form open. Basically I let them run over in the negative space around it. I liked doing the hair because these lush hairdos from the 1930s and 1940s have so much style. They invite me to style them even more. Rendered in black and white they look like stills poured into concrete. Quite different from the early portraits such as ‘Sans Titre – 06-05-14’. I also like to open up the positive form and connect it to the negative space around it. Therefor some parts of the hair and front of the face blend into the adjacent parts. Strangely but understandable the face didn’t become the focus point but the lush hair. As such the drawing celebrates the 1930s and 1940s look. Celebrities simply had these elaborate hairdos back then and I love them all. A Most Beautiful Woman The actress lived a troubled life I read. Nevertheless, in my eyes she is one of the most beautiful women I ever saw. I once read a male co-actor deliberately screwed up a kissing scene several times. That way he could kiss her again and again.

Return to the Stars This graphite pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre – 28-06-23’ depicts moviestar Veronica Lake. After Roundism (Tribute to Anita Ekberg) – 22-06-23 I thought I’d do another celebrity. However, the sale of Louise Brooks – 11-10-22 also may be partially the cause. People search for their favorite stars and an artist without a nose for the commercial is a lousy artist. I’m not leaning towards business alone though. I’m also attracted to portraiture all of a sudden, not in the least because youtube blocked me recently. Once again, I may say because I forgot to select the 18+ box for the nude content. I went out of my head. Anglo-saksons amongst you, please explain this to me. Why is it that artistic nudity is banned whereas I get to see violent video game ads between videos? Different Approach Perhaps I disgress from the subject too much. All the more reasons to do another portrait and why not. This time Veronica was on my mind. I had this incredible photograph full of chiaroscuro play. Such hefty tonal differences, especially in and around her head. By now I guess you already know my love for tonal variations. Setting out the composition I changed my mind though. Somehow I didn’t want to go extremely dark as in the last drawing. I think I already showed many times before how far I can go from a tonal point of view. What if I try to keep a loose structure, opening up planes in order to let them communicate? Open Discussion Of late I have these discussions with students about the necessity of keeping an open structure. I often see the tendency amongst students to finish forms by tightly pack contour delineations. By that I meant to say they leave no room between two adjacent planes. Many times we discuss Cézanny whom practically everybody loves. He managed to keep it loose as well, offering his painting to us alomst like an open discussion. After all, who doesn’t like a conversation in which two challenge eachother and leave the other room to reply.

Dynamics This graphite pencil drawing ‘Nude – 02-06-15’ is an attempt to create a female form in motion. The last drawing already looked very dynamic and I liked the result. Evidentually I’m not alone because not much later I sold it. Therefor I had it in my to take dynamics one step further. Why not do a couple of repeted extrapolated contours outside the body? That is: to the right and left of the nude. This way she looks almost dancing and even about to move off paper. Getting Used to It Now, I have to be honest here and admit to having to get use to what it became. A bit unexpected really although there are new aspects to this developing Roundism style that I like. Maybe it’s the amount of repetion in circular patterns that I do not really underlign. Certainly after a decade rewriting this art statement for SEO resons. Luckily I even sold a print in the past so someone was quite happy. However, as artist I tend to keep my standards high and always seek for improvement. Why wouldn’t I? Negative Space Now I come to think of it more thoroughly I think it’s all about the abundance of negative space around it. I even can remember now why I created aforementioned patterns in the first place. Surely to experiment further with the previous drawing in mind. Then again, also in an attempt to fill up the paper in a meaningful way. Otherwise the model would have looked a bit like a needle with too much nothingness around her. These last 10 years I learnt a lot. Not least that it is most important to balance out positve and negative spaces in a suiting manner. In fact, I consider this principle a keystone to my artworks nowadays.

Solarisation This graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 29-03-20’ is a bit of a mix of surrealism and cubism. After all, solarization is invented by Man Ray, even though by accident allegedly. His photos normally are classified as ‘surrealism’ by art critics. These Corona times I miss my model and look forward to have her over to sit for me again. In the meantime I make do with pictures from previous sessions although live drawing sessions are the best. I decided to employ a bit of solarisation and rendered the body slightly roundistic. Perhaps you can see me in the drawing as well? Spoiler alert: somewhere in the periphery of the artwork. Body Position Of late I had it in my mind to choose a different body position. In the past I already had her pose in so many different ones. Then, all of a sudden I was intrigued by this pose that I saw on a vintage picture online. It almost looks like a pentagram. Surely, it was the perfect pose I was looking for. Since I can afford myself hiring a model on a montlhy basis I prefer to let my model taking this pose. That’s far better than using vintage photographs anymore. As to copyright they are mine and I can make adjustments. (Un)fortunately one can do everything when you have money. However, I keep on looking for vintage pictures that inspire me. A Step Further In the next one (Roundism – 31-03-20) I took it one step further with regard to abstracting it. Lucky for me I sold that one very quickly. This one still is in my portfolio. Perhaps one day you will buy it from me?

A Sort of a Cross-over This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 12-02-25’ makes a sort of a cross-over. My older ‘Roundism’ style meeting my new ‘Neo Deco’ one. Demarcation lines are blurry. Sometimes I don’t think there’s even a clear difference, only a progression over time. What I can see is my drawings tend to become a bit more realistic again. Strange how I started off doing impressionism, realism and surrealism, sliding towards an abstracter sort of cubism. Only to find myself getting back to realism. In fact, writing this art statement and looking at the drawing I just made thumbnail-sized I see a realistic nude. When I zoom in I see abstracted linear structures and cubist styling appear. That was my very aim and in that respect I think I have succeeded. On a Stool Again Some time ago I came across a beautiful reference photo of a female nude on a stool. Not sure though who made it so I can’t give someone credit. It’s ancient anyway. Allegedly the model photographed would be Anita Ekberg, so the internet stated. Well, I don’t buy it. Her appearance looks different. However, that’s not every exciting to know. The posture is interesting enough, no matter who she is. Not the first time though I drew a female form on a stool, such as my latest pastel. I also could mention Roundism – 22-12-22. There are intriguing aspects of doing nudes on a stool. That is the potential of a model showing triangularly positioned limbs. So much better dan having a model stand straight up. Then he or she becomes to static-looking. Both Abstraction and Meaning The stool itself initially bothered me a bit. Balusters looked too heavily profiled to my taste, so I styled them a bit. On the other side they enforce the feel of the intended realism too. The cubist styling employed wasn’t to much of a challenge I must say. That’s a walk in the park. The real challenge was to have the viewer believe the scenery to be realistic whereas in fact it’s not.

Something Restless This graphite pencil drawing ‘Woman in a Red Kimono – 03-11-22’ counterparts the one I made last year cubistically. After ‘Roundism – 28-10-22’ I was out of motifs inspiring me, such as Louise Brooks. Surely I will do another portrait of her in the near future but not just yet. Something restless took hold of me. My Alma Tadema painting is progressing steadily but far from completed yet. I am not ready to start new cubist oil painting though. In fact I am struggling with the development of my art deco and roundism series. The Ingres paper comes right on time because it gives me new ways of depicting cubist forms. Recently I discovered textiles, fabrics, folds and attire again. Together with Ingres I can face another battle ahead of me with peace of mind. Last year’s session with my regular model in kimono was perfect for that quest. Stick to the Program You have to know I am always on my guard not to repeat myself. As a lawyer and management consultant I adviced clients the same. Of course it’s a rock steady principle to change today if you want to do the same tomorrow. Sadly I see so many artists stranded, chewing on the same artistic assumptions they made when they invented something original. To me, the female form always was the motivation to draw and paint. Of late I thought about picking out new motifs. Maybe increasing the narrative from a social or even a political point of view. Eventually I decided not to and stick to the motifs I like. And why not? I experimented with principles like The Implicite Order, One in Another, Variation in Repetition and Repetition in Variation and Singularity. They brought me much and I feel much more is to come. Walk Through to It This sounds a bit too fuzzy for you? Take a look at the painting at hand. I walk you straight through it. The goal was to use geometric forms only. Combined they have to trigger the recognition of something real in the spectator’s mind.

A New Year’s Kick-off A graphite pencil drawing typical for my roundism series. I felt like throwing in a piece around midnight of New Year’s Eve. My last one was ‘The Hague Forest 28-12-15’ and all of a sudden I realized something. Lately I did only landscapes and cityscapes so it was time to return to nudes again for a change. Variation is the spice of life. What about some sensuality incorporated in this drawing for people around the world? Social Media That is why I posted the drawing a couple of minutes before midnight on social media. Luckily I was not blocked by Facebook again. Prudity seems to be back on the menu and nudity is the defenseless victim again. I comtemplate a restoration of the admiration for the human body like before World War I some day. As to this I feel there is a valuable task bestowed upon me. Great Tonal Distribution Some time ago I spotted a great reference picture online. Perhaps it came from the 1950s. I don’t know for sure but the hairdo suggests it. Anyway, the nude showed great round shapes that were of my fancy. The photo also showed a great distribution of dark tones, mid tones and high lights. For artists like me that is a lot of wonderful stuff to chew on. Consequently I felt confident to extend the body shapes into the negative space around it. The eye can get hold of the body features because of this tonal distribition anyway. A little distortion therefor does not cancel the recognition. The result is an attractive female figure with lots of dynamics and swirls, even though she lies still.

4th Drawing Appreciating Fleischmann and Bauroff This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 03-02-25’ is another token of appreciation of photographer Trude Fleischmann and model Claire Bauroff. As explained in my last pastel drawing ‘Neo Deco – 25-01-25’ I saw them in Museum Arnhem. Why is it that I feel being attrackted to these artists all the time? To briefly sum it up once more: great chiaroscuro photography and composition. Claire of course is an artist and female dancer in her own right. Next to this, her slenderness is both very female and athletic. A reminder for us all, living hunderd years later, of how people can look in their natural glory. healthy and slim, not being obese. A Drawing and an Oil Painting As you true followers might know by know is that I always keep one drawing in progress at hand. Without one I simply would feel artistically forelorn. Since this artistic life is the only one I lead that means a lot. So there it is: a drawing and an oil at the same time always. With my focus on my painting ‘In Hoc Signo’ and Spring still waiting to arrive, a sort of a quicky. Well, not that exactly but I try to keep up the pace by posting an artwork a week. This makes sure I keep on thinking sphericaly like Fellini used to prescribe. If I keep up the speed the oil painting will be finished by the end of Winter. Then I can go and sketch outdoors. Artistic Accountability When you see these grand photographs of a century ago there is always a moment of doubt. First, why is it that all things nice have been done before? Secondly, what could I add to the splendour of such magnificent artistic motifs. My recepy is to simply start and measure out all proportions. There is always a slight mutation or deviation that slips into the mind. This way I came up with a series of vertical and horizontal blocks counterbalancing all things diagonal in the body. Initially I thought of executing this one in pastel.
