Now computers (i.e., LLMs) can certainly model that kind of collective consensus, in fact it's what they depend on: correlations upon correlations upon correlations, in statistical matrices we can't easily wrap our own heads around. +

Fascinating UofT School of Cities project on the correlation between neighbourhood characteristics and mayoral vote over the last few decades.

Looking at the strongest positive correlations for Olivia Chow voting areas in 2023 sure tells a tale. schoolofcities.github.io/place-and-po...

Statistics corner:

There's direct correlations and inverse correlations. There is no such thing as a direct inverse correlation.
RFK Jr: "We found that there's a direct inverse correlation between fluoride exposure and low IQ in children. So the more you get, the stupider you are."

I can say, the correlations between “lonely men” and “my ai uses are fascinating” is starting to look, if not causal, then like a venn.
Yet another intellectual trying for a clever anti-AI take. And failing. Basic social science error: sampling on the dependent variable. Easy to find unimpressive examples if you hang out in spaces populated by folks not doing interesting stuff.
People think they have amazing stories about ChatGPT. And they tell them all the time. You just don’t register them as amazing if you are a normal ish adult human being because it’s mid shit like, “it told me to eat brisket!” or “it wrote twenty emails no one wants!”

I'm beginning to thing one of the correlations they're associating with the development of autism is "things happened to you before or after you were born"

Good heads up especially for media: do not take a bunch if correlations by motivated actors seriously. If they don’t preregister their hypotheses and data, chances are the results are spurious and cherry picked
A short explanation of p-hacking and why it absolutely makes sense to ask HHS to release the study methods of their autism report in advance.

These two correlations have been my view for a long time now and its what my colleagues and I discuss frequently
The authors signal a warning folks will be looking for a single cause, but highlight two correlations:

See any correlations?
(1) As soon as Adolf Hitler became Chancellor in 1933, these lapel pins were cast so the people of Germany would know who was in his cabinet.

From VP Franz Von Pappen to Minister Konstantin Hierl wore these lapel pins.
