“The journal that printed Jane’s letter sold the cure she praised... The same periodical mocked Edward Jenner, who had effectively used cowpox as a vaccination for smallpox, and ridiculed “vaccinic mania.” @jackiantonovich.bsky.social

The root word of vaccine is vacca for cow. I think I remember hearing that before: that the first vaccine was inoculating people exposing them to cowpox. More history here:

the “first vaccine” google will acknowledge is a guy cutting open the skin of a child in 1796 and… rubbing pus from a cowpox victim into the wound crazy-style. so, like, don’t ever think medical science is better or worse than what it is

Fun fact: The term "vaccine" is derived from the Latin "vacca" meaning cow, because the first vaccine used cowpox to immunize against smallpox. #etymology

you ever think about how vaccine comes from the Latin word for cow because it was invented with cowpox?

Babies are dying because their mothers and grandmothers believe wizards. Measles is vaccine-preventable. So is flu. So is covid-19. Vaccines have come a long way since rich people injected themselves with cowpox to prevent smallpox. #VaccinesSaveLives #AntiVaxxersKill

Since her profile looks like she might be from Canada, I looked up the last case of smallpox in Canada. One kid had it in 1962, and he caught it on a trip to Brazil. So if “every kid she knew” had it, it must have been in the 1940s at the latest.

I think they had some cause to be a bit weird in the 1700s.
"Jenner took fluid from a cowpox sore on a milkmaid's hand and scratched it into the arm of his gardener's young son."

That's some weird shit right there.

Genius though.

To create a 'cowpox' 'vaccine' back in Jenner's time (really horsepox) you need to have an outbreak of horse/cowpox. Neither are lethal and both give natural immunity to smallpox. Contact with either did not require pus from an infected animal. This is factual, it's how immunity works

Vaccines are one of the safest things you can put into your body. They are designed to not hurt you, but merely to give your immune system a specific target.

The name Vaccine comes from the word Vacca, for cow, because Cowpox (far milder than Smallpox) was the first discovery.

1) Formal medical education in the modern sense didn't exist in Jenner's lifetime, and it's not relevant.
2) 20th century smallpox vaccines were still made with cowpox, just like Jenner's.
3) Better medical ethics today don't change the fact that Jenner's vaccine worked and worked well.

Dr. Jenner developed the Snallpox vaccine decades before germ theory. He thought Smallpox and the milder Cowpox came from a horse disease called, “horse grease.” He reasoned milk maids transferred horse grease to cows’ udders where it became Cowpox or Smallpox. Wrong theory, right treatment.

Edward Jenner's demonstration of the cowpox-based vaccine was in 1796. Earlier innoculation procedures used live smallpox; these worked but were FAR riskier.
