#crapware
It's a long time since I wentured into Windows download country, but I have to find a bit of software for an ancient Toshiba.

Yikes, it's a world of popups and scams and attempted crapware downloads, I had forgotten.

It’s not that simple. I stream with an AppleTV device because I use that ecosystem and they do a good job of not adding “crapware”. The issue with no updates is that LG does occasionally fix things like HDMI-ARC startup lag/interoperability issue with their own soundbar I’ve had for 2 years.

Don't reinstall Windows if you PC is slow. Try these simple tricks, and you should see a noticeable speed boost.
14 Easy Fixes to Make Windows 11 Feel Faster
Although the situation is improving, new computers come with a lot of unnecessary software, sometimes called bloatware, crapware, or PUPs (potentially unwanted programs). A few years ago, a Lenovo PC I tested had nearly 20 so-called helper programs that would occasionally pop up and interrupt what I was doing.

Looking for a solution to a shortcoming in popular software right now is so depressing. Any fix with a creation date less than a year old is nearly guaranteed to be untrustable Claude-generated crapware. 😩

Seeing promising trend of ai enabled deshittification. People using ai to hack into crappy ad riddled smart TVs, remove all the crapware and create more user friendly interfaces.

So many ads and prompts to download crapware on that website. Ew.

I swear, all #java "enterprise" crapware just works like "Here's a 4mb stack trace, nowhere in there will the actual problem be referenced, but eventually you'll find a 16-year-old post to a random forum where you'll find the issue came from line 1937 of […]

I want to see it destroy Google's abusive surveillance business model, its support of Russian agent authoritarian dictator and traitor Krasnov Trump, its abandonment of "Don't be evil", its corrupt lobbying, its appalling bait-and-switch plan to close Android to devs, its crapware burning batteries.

The #RetroGaming feed is so much cleaner now that I’ve started blocking the AI spammers that post 30 retro AI crapware links per day. Funny how GenAI is even ruining a nearly 50 year old hobby.

It’s bad enough when sloppers churn out constant half finished crapware “recomps” or whatever but it’s especially insulting when a game that they charge money for operates like this
In the last few hours, Battlefield 6 has

• Killed another popular game mode (Gauntlet)
• Released a £30 'Shortcut Bundle' that unlocks everything and prestiges all weapons
• *massively* restricted all XP gain (incl. weapon XP) to 300/min
• FAILED TO CHECK THE NEW SKINS FOR GEN AI HALLUCINATIONS 💀💀

Good on them
Samsung loads their phones with bullshit and backdoors. They take it upon themselves periodically interrupt service that has NOTHING to do with them other than you victimizing yourself buying their product. And they install crapware games i never asked for. That new TV? GFY Sam

Maybe I'll salt water some Samsung showroom models in high traffic stores that are off. Smoke on powerup is not going to help your brand image. But do feel free to install unsolicited crapware again

Most people impressed by generative AI crapware are, shocker, people who don’t have to use it
This post was inspired by them releasing a video on the ai photoshop clone that gave me whiplash. Half the video is linus staring at the screen and going "this is the future" the other half is b-roll of LTT staff using it and saying how dog shit and non-functional it is
Linus tech tips starting to dip their grimy toes into pro-ai content, taking ai sponsors, fuck that dude

Ai is the reason tech is so fucking expensive most of your brands are priced out of the tech

I mean, let's not over-sell Linux; it's still a bit of a faff

But I think you could convert 100% of Windows users immediately if you just let them print a document without all the crapware you get on Windows, like "Yes, you press the print button & then it prints, no there is no pop-up selling ink"

I basically spend about half of my job helping seniors get crapware off their tech.

I do not think it can be understated how much of this crap *specifically* targets the elderly.

But also ... where do even start? And how do people get to this age not knowing?

Because they’re hacks and frauds so the best they can do is AI crapware based on stolen LLM data.

Yes, thank you, we are aware that the big LLM vendors are trying to cram their stupid products into everything under the sun. That's one of the reasons people have gotten so fed up with them.

(And when they don't work, which is often, whoo boy they are the ultimate crapware.)
