Shetland horizontal mills - used for a 1000 years - now mostly ruinous. You will find them alone or in groups, like these examples in North Yell. An intact working example survives at the Crofthouse Museum in Dunrossness which you can visit! #hessupported #coastarch #scotarchstrat

This is the kind of crofthouse I’m going to have Hannibal renovate in my Scottish fic.

Yep it’s going to be basic as he will be a vernacular architecture enthusiast. Although obviously he’s going to install an indoor toilet. We know how he feels about his toilet privileges.

I’m having fun imagining Hannibal moving to Scotland.

Will is going to be ex Glasgow polis (police) who moves to a remote island to retire in peace with his dogs and his outboard motor fixing. Only another out of towner starts renovations on the crofthouse near him.

The house is called Lagangarbh Hut, though it was once a crofthouse. It's owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is managed by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. See more here: smc.org.uk/hut/lagangarbh

Mootie's Hoos My practice is rooted in a deep interest in landscape: its history, its people, and the traces of lives once lived. I explore how memory and place intersect, using research, storytelling, and found materials to uncover and share the hidden narratives of a place. Mootie's Hoos' was created during a residency in Shetland and centres on conversations with an elderly woman about her life in a crofthouse in North Roe. Her story, one of resilience, crofting, and knitting while her husband was away fishing, echoes the experience of many women on the island. Their quiet strength is woven through this body of work. I work with materials that are found, made, or collected: peat, sand, stone, textiles, wallpaper, vintage maps. Each offering a direct and tactile link to the land. These are combined in textured paintings, collage, and assemblage to create visual records of memory and experience. Boxes often hold symbolic objects discovered on site, acting as vessels of place and time. Sketchbooks are central to my process: they are spaces for research, experimentation, writing, and reflection. Photography and film also play a role in recording the landscapes and details that inform the work. At its core, this exhibition is about the quiet imprint of lives on the land - and the powerful connection between people, memory, and place. Bunnertoon, we're told, means 'above the town'. The Hoy Heritage Centre has more history of Quholme, Bunnertoon and the PMD connection than you could possibly wish.
