Politics breeding cruelty, algorithms breeding outrage, most of us tired. So fuck it; new Substack, all about lightsomeness. Free, one piece every Sunday.

I'm a small account, so reposts by my mighty pals on here to like-minded humans would mean a lot 🙌

Bunnertoon, we're told, means 'above the town'. The Hoy Heritage Centre has more history of Quholme, Bunnertoon and the PMD connection than you could possibly wish.

Photo of a young Peter Maxwell Davies (and the head of a woman with a blue hairband) can also be seen inspecting the interior of Quholme, a ruined and roofless crofthouse. We see a bare doorway and window, some remaning walls, and an absence of roof; behind which is the sea and sea-cliffs at Craig-gate.

When I write about about Shetland ponies, I am writing about love. Love for #Shetland, it's windswept hill and wild sea. Love for island memories of independence despite exploitation & love for the ponies who helped folk survive & who still connect people to land & history.

I'm still betting on it being born by the roadside on the way up, preferably still on the M6 but they'll probably imagine up a mythic 'isolated crofthouse' by the thunderingly busy A9. #TheArchers

info on the exhibition!
Mootie's Hoos My practice is rooted in a deep interest in landscape: its history, its people, and the traces of lives once lived. I explore how memory and place intersect, using research, storytelling, and found materials to uncover and share the hidden narratives of a place. Mootie's Hoos' was created during a residency in Shetland and centres on conversations with an elderly woman about her life in a crofthouse in North Roe. Her story, one of resilience, crofting, and knitting while her husband was away fishing, echoes the experience of many women on the island. Their quiet strength is woven through this body of work. I work with materials that are found, made, or collected: peat, sand, stone, textiles, wallpaper, vintage maps. Each offering a direct and tactile link to the land. These are combined in textured paintings, collage, and assemblage to create visual records of memory and experience. Boxes often hold symbolic objects discovered on site, acting as vessels of place and time. Sketchbooks are central to my process: they are spaces for research, experimentation, writing, and reflection. Photography and film also play a role in recording the landscapes and details that inform the work. At its core, this exhibition is about the quiet imprint of lives on the land - and the powerful connection between people, memory, and place. some favourites!!!!
photo of a painting of a crofthouse: white with a red roof, the back is glowing as if illuminated by the setting sun. there is a movement to the green grass in front, you can feel the wind blowing through the grass, and the sky is a light blue another crofthouse painting (this one is my favourite) - a white painted crofthouse with a blue roof, the grass in the foreground is a deep bottle green, and the sky looks like northern lights an incredibly atmospheric painting - a bright white crofthouse against a stark black painted sky, with dark dark green foreground. the roof is corrugated, and there are bright splatters of flowers photo showing two pages of a sketchbook: a watery ink line drawing with blues, a tree in a field. very basic drawing but each line is utterly perfect

This is the kind of crofthouse I’m going to have Hannibal renovate in my Scottish fic.

Yep it’s going to be basic as he will be a vernacular architecture enthusiast. Although obviously he’s going to install an indoor toilet. We know how he feels about his toilet privileges.
Very small (two rooms) abandoned crofthouse with missing roof and no window panes or door. Approx 1 metre from the rocky seashore. Hill and blue sky in background.
