It has changed a lot. Back in the 1970s, anything with 'folk' in it in tended was a kind of post-hippy attitude as in folk music, folk art, self-sufficiency, canal boats (and their art), the Cropedy Convention, etc. The Folk Show on Radio 2 still tends to hold to that: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...
BBC Radio 2 - The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe

I've seen him about 20 times over the years. 3 different years at Cropedy over 3 nights plus others. He's in my top 5 :)

Middlewick was a slay maker that joined the Parliamentarian cause serving in William Waller’s army. At the battle of Cropedy Bridge 1644 Middlewick received serious wounds noted in a petition made on his behalf.

My van music today is a bit of folk-rock. Swarbs fiddle playing is off the scale at times on this album. Also been in that pub so, so many times, mostly at Fairports Cropedy Annual Reunion.

I used to go to Fairports Cropedy Convention with an ex. I couldn’t really hack it as too old-school folky plus the general volume of tie dye was too much for me but there were a few good tunes inc this.

The three severe wounds Middlewick received at Cropedy Bridge caused long term issues for him and his family. The petition notes how for the next two years Middlewick was unable to work and was reduced to a “very sad and miserable condition.”

Yep - a few dodgy moments! But what a raconteur, eh? I saw him compere Cropedy a few times in the 80s and he was perfect for that. A great musician too 👍

It was definitely my go to beer in Cropedy when attending the festival. They were the first and only organic brewery in the Uk for many moons. One of my favourite mugs….

An English friend told me Richard Thompson coming on with his lourd rock band at Cropedy was her group's cue to head to the pub. From my American perspective, though, he would have been the most famous performer there by far.

As a teenager I knew *of* Fairport Convention, because it was always listed as the group Sandy Denny was in when reading about Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore."

I had to get older to learn about Richard Thompson and meet an immigrant friend who had been to Cropedy multiple times.

Do you ever go to Cropedy? My mate does the sound there and I’ve been invited a few times but never went.

Speaking of which, I can tell the Cropedy Festival was last weekend, because my YT subscription list is wall to wall videos from it.

When I was younger, I really, really wanted to go to one.

I keep thinking it's about time for my bi-decade trip to Cropedy: the people in my 00's trip seemed to be the same people as my 80's one, only older (incl me), and pulling trollies of camping chairs (and tables) rather than just a blanket under one arm :-)
