“I dress myself in a swirled cloak of cross beds,
Wrapping my arms around the sky,
I hug the clouds in glorified joy”

Crossbeds in the Cedar Mesa Sandstone stained with iron oxides. The topography says this was an ancient dune field. I love it when the #rocks tell their stories.

"There were festooned crossbeds and limestone sinks, pillow lavas and petrified trees, incised meanders and defeated streams. There were dike swarms and slickensides, explosion pits, volcanic bombs. Pulsating glaciers. Hogbacks. Radiolarian ooze.

Superb winter's day looking at Pleistocene dune deposits; lots of crossbeds, interdune peats, watertable iron pans, liesegang designs, and wind-rain-sea spray sculpted sandstone. Kariotahi, west Auckland 🧪⚒️

A look at the sedimentary rocks on Mars that require flowing fluids. Focuses on bedload transport (of loose sediment) to form crossbeds - recognition of these structures provides clues to the former presence of fluids, particularly water.

Evidence for bedload deposition on Mars
Why focus on bedload deposition? Because it provides evidence for fluids (air-water) on the ancient Martian surface

Fossiliferous Pleistocene calcarenites
Nice arrangement of the crossbeds! 😀

I drove past the Burger King on South Park St, which I think replaced a Country Kitchen with a parking lot cut into sandstone. The late Bob Dott took us there to see trough crossbeds followed by coffee inside on a chilly day.

Right, not liesegang bands, these are aeolian crossbeds.

Angels Landing Trail, in Zion National Park, Utah, USA. In Jurassic time, a widespread erg, or desert dune field, deposited thick sandstone layers now called the Navajo Sandstone. Dramatic preserved dune crossbeds are exposed in the valley of the North Fork of the Virgin River #geology. 🧪⚒️

Just magnificent... 👌, the iron coloring the crossbeds...😍

Gorgeous! I’m a sucker for crossbeds in the Navajo Sandstone.

A mess of cross-cuting leisegang bands and aeolian crossbeds, common in slumps/soft-sediment deformation zones in the Jurassic erg deposits of the Colorado Plateau. Some seem to be associated with groundwater/spring discharge, others seem to have been altered during hydrocarbon migration.

3/3 …the Nonesuch Shale, that has been replaced by native copper. The irregular layers are crossbeds formed as the original sediments were deposited by a current. The White Pine Mine copper mineralization occurred at 1.05 to 1.06 billion years ago. Amazing! Vote copper ore to win the Ore Cup below!

Outcrop of metasandstone in the 1.7 billion year old Yavapai Schist in central Arizona USA that has some intriguing relict sedimentary structures, including trough and hummocky cross-stratification and cobble-sized rip-up clasts. The huge hummocky crossbeds, with rip-ups, could be a tsunamite. 🧪⚒️

Some of the crossbeds in that sandstone unit are 20m high. Quite spectacular. Photo taken around here: 36.60477249574148, 108.62175833199063

Those crossbeds are beautiful! You can almost see the ancient wind directions preserved in those sweeping curves. Iron oxides create such stunning color contrasts against the pale sandstone - nature's own geological artwork telling tales of Permian desert winds.

Grotzinger: Grains that make up this rock are too coarse to have been carried by wind, so we think crossbeds formed in water.

Look at these pretty crossbeds. Great big ones like these are subaerial (desert sand dunes). Y’all have no idea how happy I am to put my rock hammer on outcrop again. It’s been too long. Note in one pic how you can trace crossbeds on 2 different joint planes & grok their 3D shape

What did you study/survey (besides how many pigs fit in a Honda Jazz)? These large crossbeds in the sed series?
