Migration time! Twice a year we get an influx of crossbills and I usually miss them, but I caught the fall crew this morning! #crossbills #viewfromthedeck

Just couldn't get a decent focus on this male Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra). Notice his buddy hanging upside down in the top corner. 😀 Somewhat uncommon around here but this fall is shaping up to be an invasion year. #BirdingHungary #crossbills #BirdsSeenIn2026 #finches

Better Red Crossbills! They were still very far away. I guess it’s finally the day for them. There have been SO MANY in Portland, and now I’m seeing loads of Pine Siskins as well! 🪶 @thebirdsnest.bsky.social

Just had a flock of 30 redwings fly overhead at culpepper dish, heading north. And 6 crossbills so far @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social

Terrible bird photos which are somehow still diagnostic 😂 I’ve been hearing Red Crossbills all around town for months, never seeing them. Today there were fifteen in my yard, and this photo proves it! There must be a major irruption this year — anyone else in the PNW seeing this? 🪶

as an outsider just looking in, it feels like Portland is a much better job than Seattle have protecting their trees. It’s nice. Everyone will get to benefit and see and hear the crossbills.

New prepint! Parrot Crossbills are more than large Common Crossbills. Shifts in allometry suggest developmental changes during beak development ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

The forest was a bit more lively this morning with the arrival of some of our winter guests. The Crossbills and Siskins were flying (too) high, but the Brambling and the Firecrest would reluctantly pose for a second. 🪶

The paper mentions crossbills, conifers gain nothing from crossbill seed predation, pines, spruce & hazelnut benefit from Nutcracker caching, many seeds eaten, but plant seeds are dispersed.

As was shown in the case of Loxia crossbills, as well as in Darwin finches, diversification of ecotypes can occur in short time scales without genome-wide diversification.

The mutualism between nutcrackers and trees need not be tightly coupled over evolutionary time.

A really interesting look at the ongoing mass exodus of Clark’s Nutcrackers across the western US. 🪶

The Nutcracker Nation is on the move. So are crossbills, Pinyon Jays, and others, pouring out of the Sierra, Cascades, Great Basin, and Rockies.

Return of the red crossbills. They were in residence for about two months this summer and departed in early September. The pine siskins are current residents.

yes, there’s different types and the different types like different cones some on the PNW like Sitka spruce cones and others like Western Hemlock cones. Would like to know what type you have visiting? You can read about type on the Merlin app if you have it.

Do you have a spark bird? I don’t remember having just one. My love of birds grew through juncos, grosbeaks, crossbills, wrens, and many small moments. There are no lesser birds, and no bird is “just” an everyday bird. Read more: https://wildbirdwarble.wordpress.com/
