10/ Our results show topographically organised, stream-specific routing of crossmodal signals. Crossmodal information is selectively routed according to the organising principles of the target area. This structured connectivity enables the spatially coherent integration of multisensory information.

Diversity matters. Multi-task, multisensory, crossmodal.
🧠 Resting-state fMRI is often treated as the gold standard for studying the brain’s intrinsic organization.

But is it actually the best way to estimate functional architecture?

We tested this directly.

New review/theory/argumentative paper is out: "The size and shape of sound: The role of articulation and acoustics in iconicity and crossmodal correspondences".

The paper delves deeply into what phonetic and cognitive mechanisms underpin spoken language iconicity.

New study on crossmodal iconicity shows [r] = rough and [l] = smooth, even in langs that conflate them.

The results show "that speech sounds are not just acoustic objects, but they also have a texture and a shape to them".

The alveolar trill is perceived as jagged/rough by speakers of different languages
Typological research shows that across languages, trilled [r] sounds are more common in adjectives describing rough as opposed to smooth surfaces. In this study

Deafness rapidly reorganizes functional brain networks in adult mice
Sensory loss triggers crossmodal reorganization across sensory modalities, and accumulating evidence indicates that this adaptive capacity persists into adulthood. However, the global organizing principles of such plasticity remain poorly understood, as conventional animal model approaches do not permit longitudinal, whole-brain measurements. Here, we use ultra-high-field (15.2T) BOLD fMRI to map deafening-induced functional reorganization across the entire brain in young adult mice. Within one week of deafening, the auditory cortex is recruited by somatosensory and visual inputs, while stimulus-evoked responses are potentiated in the spared sensory pathways. Reorganization extends beyond sensory cortices to higher-order association areas, including anterior cingulate, retrosplenial, and posterior parietal cortices. Resting-state fMRI further reveals strengthened coupling both within sensory systems and between sensory systems and a default mode-like network. These findings demonstrate that adult-onset deafness rapidly reorganizes functional brain networks and further implicate the default mode-like network as a potential mediator of crossmodal integration. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. Final thing: Trying something analogous with blind/blindfolded humans (echolocating an object, then identifying it by *touch*) shows that crossmodal information transfer is very hard and even humanity's finest echolocators struggle with it. But it's possible! Kind of.

Very interesting indeed. Now the engineer asks: if true, how can we use these neuron-level properties to nudge the brain as a whole toward more favorable states, cure mental disorders, aid recovery from strokes, boost crossmodal visual mental imagery? Control the controllers.
