I should note that earlier this year they ran a crowdcube funder that was inexplicably closed early, raising only £1.5m.

...perhaps it was due to existing crowdcube investors nearly rioting because the documents explicitly stated they were raising money so their early VC investors could cash out.

I was recreationally reading the What3Words accounts and noted they'll need to raise more money soon, but surely they wouldn't dare run another crowdfunder given the hilariously bad financials.

Well apparently they would. Here we go again.

He started hybrid estate agent Emoov where he suckered in investors. In early 2018 he was claiming a valuation of £100m. In July 2018 he went via Crowdcube to raise £1.9m from small investors.

His claim was that it was needed for marketing costs for an IPO.

Given they have a year to go at best, they'll be trying to raise money again.

DO NOT INVEST IN THE W3W CROWDCUBE. They've done it three times now, and I expect they'll do it again out of desperation. You will lose all of your money.

The reality was he needed the money to keep the lights on.

There were not enough instructions and ‘promised investments’ didn’t actually materialise.

By December 2018 it had already collapsed owing £15.2m.

Small Investors lost everything.

On top of their weird crowdcube fundraiser... this just looks crazier and crazier.

We have a phrase for this in the UK: technically insolvent - I'd run for the fucking hills before having anything to do with what3words.
Its What3Words accounts filing day!

They're doing so great. Nothing to worry about.

I'm sure "the launch of our advertising revenue stream" will offset the "lost major Enterprise customer". Ads are really profitable now, right?

I bought a very small number of shares in Freetrade back in January 2022 through CrowdCube.

My notes reveal:

- Amount invested £231
- Expected #IIGG takeover proceeds £30.

Not really a case of the early bird catching the worms! 😹

A bonus to get any return from a CrowdCube investment though.

Unbound were able to budget how much it would cost to produce each book (edit, proof, cover, format). Support for some books was WAY over the targets. They also crowdfunded via Crowdcube. There's been a lot of money floating around, but none of it going in the direction of authors or backer refunds.

"Unbound appears to have raised £166,297 in November 2023, £102,397 of which was raised through Crowdcube, in order to launch Boundless."- The Bookseller

I agree, looks like they knew they were going under so jumped ship with IP they don't have rights to.

This makes me so angry. Honestly think it should be illegal. Losing millions, and every so often asking the public to fund your large salaries for the next while, with no financials even provided.

Not my experience of tech startups in the 00s and 10s. Most folks I know that worked there could have earned more at say Accenture or in traditional financial tech, especially as contractors. Most did it for the working environment rather than their 0.002% options. Barely any VC/CrowdCube funding.

Looks like the Lloyds takeover means that anyone who invested in Curve via one of the Crowdcube funding cycles has basically just pissed their money up the wall.

Lesson learned. I'll stay well away from Crowdcube in the future.
