Greetings new followers! Here you'll find occasional ❄️ science posts about my favourite things: peering down moulins, collecting cryoconite and squinting at computers wondering why my sensor isn't working, mostly in Greenland but sometimes in UK rivers.

On Earth, the dust that builds up on glaciers is called cryoconite, and the pockets it forms are called cryoconite holes. These pockets of water on our planet are often teeming with simple life, including algae, fungi, and cyanobacteria.

Evaluation of Extraction Solvents for Untargeted Metabolomics to decipher the Dissolved Organic Matter of Antarctic Cryoconite Holes - Astrobiology
Cryoconite holes are biological hotspots with a high biogeochemical turnover rate, contributing significantly to the glacial ecosystem's overall carbon cycles and net fluxes.

interesting article, another reason for concern about ice cap/glacier melt.

“The concentrations of plutonium activity in the cryoconite that we have observed are—especially in the Northern Hemisphere—orders of magnitude higher than in other environmental matrices used to monitor the environment”

All of those things. We dig to the old surface to collect ice cores or sample cryoconite, and en route we collect samples & metadata about the snowpack. Also, learning point 1 for students is that you must probe to the surface before digging because crevasses happen. Got scary photos of that.

Cryoconite - Dark Spots That Bring Glaciers to Life

❄️ Glaciers are not just ice❄️

We examined the sources of radioactivity in cryoconite, the sediment accumulating on glacier surfaces.

The main contributors? Nuclear tests, the Chernobyl disaster, and the atmospheric re-entry of the SNAP-9A satellite.
