MOIESE, MT — The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes conducted a prescribed burn of more than 1,800 acres at the CSKT Bison Range on Tuesday, marking the first burn at the site since the 1950s. Fire is back at the CSKT Bison Range for the first time in 50+ years. 🔥 Here's why that matters. CSKT Bison Range conducts first prescribed burn in decades to restore native wildlife habitat Shannon Clairmont, the supervisory biologist at the CSKT Bison Range, said the burn is a major step in the tribe's effort to restore the land to its natural state following decades of ecological change. "This is going to be pretty historic for us at the Bison Range," Clairmont said. Since the tribe took ownership of the range in 2020, their work has focused on revitalizing the land that Native people once managed through controlled burning. The last burn at the site happened in the 1950s, when restrictions rose, and burns were no longer allowed. Wait until you see the amount of racism CSKT has to deal with on the Flathead Reservation... their own reservation... and it is politically dominated by MAGA.
When I lived in the res 3 years ago in Dayton and Polson... it was blinding. I'd never realized how much there was until then.

This was a happy encounter that lifted my spirits after the last several nasty smoke and heat days. The young people were so excited and bubbly. It was a reminder of reasons for hope. I hope it gives you hope too. My thoughts are with all affected by the fires…..and I mean all.

We didnt get nearly the amount of tourists we usually do this summer. US 93 on the Flathead Reservation between Polson and Missoula should be busier. Just passed Ravalli and the CSKT Bison Range.. and there is so little traffic.

It’s a beautiful and wild area. The Bison Range and much of the wilderness portions of the Mission Mtns are owned and managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). Much of the valley is part of the Reservation.

My second observation: right from the start, every funeral I have been to since I was 9 & everyone I have lost came roaring into my mind and sang their harmonies with us. Tears puddled, trickled and flowed for the gift of life and people known well & cherished along my way. (2 of2)
