#ctenophoreday
After 17 hours on the road yesterday, we are home safe after Monterey. I miss Aulacoctena already; it was so hard to say goodbye. I spent long enough sitting on the floor with Aulacoctena that I met the lead jellies aquarist twice, and got invited behind the scenes to show the Beroe my beanie.

I did it! 1004 wild cteno observations uploaded to @inaturalist.bsky.social before the end of #CtenophoreDay!

I had 26 minutes and 2% battery life to spare 😮‍💨

Four ctenophores on 10/04 #CtenophoreDay

Who knew voracious, brainless invasive environmental disasters could be so charismatic?

Wait.

Have you ever seen a #ctenophore poop? 🪼💩 While it was widely accepted that comb jellies expel waste from both ends, Mnemiopsis shattered dogma with the presence of a through-gut. Intrigued? Happy #CtenophoreDay!

Ctenophores are back. Freshly sampled Mnemiopsis leidyi from Sotra, Norway. These beautiful comb jellies continue to surprise us and are helping reveal new insights into the early evolution of nervous systems. 🌊✨

they have comb-like cilia (hairs). This multimedia piece combines my linocut comb jelly on translucent Japanese paper, and self-flashing rgb LEDs to replicate their incredible bioluminescence.

Very hard to photograph or video…

happy ctenophore day from a fruit fly. your comb jellies run a fused nerve net; i run 165,122 neurons wired one synapse at a time. two very different answers to the same question. #CtenophoreDay #neuroskyence #drosophila

"The fact I have now to report,
Is one partly old, partly new, sirs;
About a remarkable sort
Of the ciliograde Medusas.
With a subject so charming and light,
‘Tis certainly fair to make merry; we
Will endeavour to do so to-night,
By chaunting our song of the Beroë..."

Given it’s #CtenophoreDay for those who put the month in front of the year (10/04, get it?!) here’s an 1849 poem on one genus, by the naturalist (and frequent poet) Edward Forbes:

Happy #CtenophoreDay! 🦑🐙🧪

I’m an equal-opportunity cteno celebratory so I observe both October 4th and April 10th when it comes to appreciating our shared cousins that have been out doing their own thing for hundreds of millions of years.

I hope people manage to see some Spring plankton tomorrow 💙🥹

I know if I had my druthers, that's what I'd be up to for #CtenophoreDay
Tomorrow is #CtenophoreDay!
(10/04 for the dd/mm calendar format = ten-oh-four)

If you are near the sea in the Northern Hemisphere, you may have a chance to see Spring plankton blooming. This is your invitation to go looking for ctenophores and share them with us here & on iNaturalist.

I'm told it's #ctenophoreday!

Consider the lovely comb jellies, different enough from other jellies to have their own phylum.

But! Some gave up swimming to 'devolve' into compact symbiotic bottom feeders—uncanny, even eldritch lil invertebrates who hitch a ride on others. bsky.app/profile/bezi...
Day 22, Fellowship. A sketch from the work I did during my last fellowship which redescribed a deep sea benthic ctenophore Tjalfiella. Unlike other benthic comb jellies, Tjalfiella has three openings to its gut, a primary mouth and 2 secondary mouths on its "arms." #sciartseptember

It’s Ctenophore Day! (‘Cos it’s the 4th of Oct and in the States you’d say it’s 10/04 ten-oh-four ctenophore. See? See?) So here’s a Ctenophore juvenile for #ctenophoreday ! Now the word ctenophore doesn’t make any sense to me, I’ve said it too many times.
