NAFTA was fine until they wanted more, so after the usual theatrics we had CUSMA……….then CUSMA wasn’t enough. Their credibility as a trade agreement partner was circling the drain and then the outrageous demands. See also numerous flip flops on softwood lumber. Enough. Move on.

And when the Americans came knocking in early October to try to hammer out something quick to save their asses, we seem to have slow walked them at just the right pace.
We’ll see how this new Congress deals with the relationship, but it’s possible the threat of ending CUSMA is hollow now.

The Canadains aren’t offering enough? Why should we offer anything at all, we already have a deal called CUSMA. Anything we do in this deal will be added on top of the next CUSMA deal.

Poilievre would have been a disastrous PM. Imagine no CBC, no major projects except oil to northern BC, no Davos speech, no goodwill for Canada around the world, no united middle powers, no EU alliance, and no new trade deals across 5 continents.

We already have a deal, called CUSMA, that the US is flagrantly violating anyway. They obviously can't be remotely trusted until after Trump is gone, so why pretend otherwise? Canada is focused on taking our business elsewhere.

Trump did not extend the Canada United States Mexico trade agreement. CUSMA. There was supposed to be a mandatory review on July 1, 2026. It didn't happen. But, July 1st was not the expiration date, so the agreement is in limbo, like being a zombie.
