Cuvieronius was an elephant relative with spiral-shaped tusks! The genus was found in parts of North and South America during the Pleistocene epoch

All great proboscideans are photogenic.
Cuvieronius is no exception.

Cuvieronius, a distant cousin of elephants that had a funky pair of spiralling tusks. It lived from southern North America to South America and went extinct 10, 000 bce alongside most American megafauna.

So I sorta know there's this 2014 film called Dinosaur Island, the one with that color feathered T. rex. And it apparently briefly features Cuvieronius??

1. WHAT GAVE THE BIRDS THE CONFIDENCE TO ATTACK THE CUVIERONIUS?
The birds saw that Cuvieronius are about the same height as themselves, are herbivorous, have sparse hair, and are four-legged.
To the birds, Cuvieronius resembled...overlarge toxodon. Their brain said 'prey'. (2/9)

June was a very busy month, including an endemic-focused safari in Kenya - Which I hope to share more about some day!
The multiple African elephants we've seen got me thinking about the much wider range of proboscideans in the Pleistocene. Cuvieronius spread over much of South America #FossilFriday

#FossilFriday visiting the Field Museum's fossil mammals. Here for (mostly) mastodons, but check out this beauty. Lovely twisted tusks of Cuvieronius hyodon from Bolivia.

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Cuvieronius hyodon

From Pleistocene Americas, we have one of the last gomphotheres to have walked the Earth. Named after Georges Cuvier, its fossils were some of the first from the New World to be studied. It's notable for its straight, spiraling tusks

Just as in Europe and other continents, the human-driven extinction of megafauna like elephants had hugely negative impacts on American ecosystems.

If we want to make them function healthily once more, that factor mustn't be overlooked.

Rewilding could fill gap left by Panama's lost giants
Many large herbivores that once roamed modern-day Panama have declined or died out—including the 6-meter-long giant ground sloth and elephant-related creatures called Cuvieronius. New research suggest...

#FossilFriday it’s been a great week visiting the Texas vertebrate paleontology collection and the Texas Science museum to study proboscideans! From left to right below: the holotype of Gnathabelodon (Blancotherium) buckneri, a Torynobelodon mandible, and a Cuvieronius skull.

I’ve noticed a couple reconstructions of South American gomphotheres with downcurved tusks. One for Notiomastodon, another for Cuvieronius (far right of the right image). Does anyone know why they were reconstructed like this in the past?

The largest species of mammoth, the Columbian mammoth was one of the last large elephants to inhabit the grassland environments of North America during the Pleistocene epoch.

During the same period of time, the gompothere Cuvieronius inhabitted similar environments of South America.

Finally got to Ep 7: When The Continents Collided.

I actually really enjoyed this one. While the plot armor for the twin Cuvieronius calfs got pretty ridiculous, the herd's overall story was still super investing. It also actually did a good job representing the GABI. (1/2)
