I’ve mentioned cyanogenic plants in some of my posts, but let’s take a proper look. Cyanogenesis is the ability to produce cyanide (HCN). It’s a widespread chemical defense in the Angiosperms + a few Gymnosperms & ferns. 🧵☠️ #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Heteromeles is another monotypic genus of #Rosaceae #Amygdaloideae (but it’s sometimes placed in the larger, Asian genus Photinia). Immature fruits of H. arbutifolia are cyanogenic. As fruits mature, the toxin shifts out of the mesocarp & into the seeds. #cyanogenesis #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
