This is something that James Roberts explored in his great run on TRANSFORMERS for IDW; for Cybertronians gender is a literal construct and they are all fluid because they can just...transform...such as Lug and Anode, or how Whirl; whose chassis isn't fully humanoid, uses a female holo-avatar.

Hahahahahahahaha. Yeah, it's really good. Apparently, Cybertronians can just change their gender but none of them think to do it because their gender is, essentially, "Cybertronian". Male-coded, but not male. They don't realize they can be girls until they meet species with actual genders.

Onyx Prime has an alt mode that seems to be far more similar to his bipedal form than the others.

It does a great job of selling how terrifying Cybertronians are. Even the Aurobots, who may be good, are treated with the unease befitting a massive mechanical alien coming to earth for the first time.
