Or... there is a secret underwater foil, a "daggerboard" if you will, that is less resistant to being pushed sideways through the water than going forward.

I have a lot of trouble getting into sailboats, canoes, & rowboats from the water. Nearly turtled a sailboat once when someone suggested I climb up the daggerboard & swing myself over from there.

Harbor at Spakenburg. Note the "wings" on the boats: a local called them "swords", and they serve the same purpose as a keel or daggerboard, as these are flat-bottomed boats that draft as little as 90cm, and the channel here can be as shallow as 1m.

That's part of the beauty of a one design fleet. Hull, spars/mast, daggerboard, rudder are all the same material and size so it doesn't really make a difference if you're using your boat vs. a charter boat.

I learned how to sail on one in the early 60s. The daggerboard slot had been removed, and a cabin and a concrete keel added. It had been donated to the Southeast Alaska Boy Scout Council, and the "Restless Wind" was a Sea Explorer post.

back from sail camp for today. idk if this is a win or loss but bc of my ana not only am i too light to fix the boat if it capsizes (i have to fully stand on the daggerboard AND pull) but in heavy winds, i go slightly slower bc im too light to keep the boat fully in the water therefore hiking a LOT

The Toppers, fortunately, were entirely plastic. Basically an overweight surfboard with a tiller. Never managed to break it, though if you pulled that trick with the daggerboard you'd likely take a swim.
