Last to bloom in my garden: Dendranthema ‘Sheffield Pink’. Such a mysterious color, somewhere between pink and apricot

Long ago the fairies played too long catching sunbeams. When night fell, they hid them in their flower cradles and slept. By dawn, the beams had spilled out, turning some flowers gold – the buttercup and the marigold – and leaving a golden heart in all the rest. #FolkloreThursday

Given a central sphere, how many identical spheres can “kiss” it without overlapping? Arrange six pennies around a central penny, and you’ll find they fit snugly into a daisylike pattern. But in higher dimensions, the problem gets much harder. www.quantamagazine.org/mathematicia...

I think I'll grow 'Oklahoma' zinnias again next year. Smaller flowers than 'Benary's Giant' but a lot of them. They'll look good in pots all around the beds. My photo from 2021. #Garden2026

My other favorite find that I forgot to mention is Chicory! They’re in the same family as dandelions, so they tend to pop up in places you’d find dandelions. This particularly determined specimen was pushing through a crack in the sidewalk.

Anyone recognise this plant growing wild in a strip of unplugged land. Bright blue flowers. Might be an escapee
