The variant ecosystem was something else. It was amazing how many of them sprang out of the big cleanup. I only ever tried a few, but Zang was the one that really captured my heart.
It's wonderful that DarkGod is still very much just happily doing his thing. ToME is a beacon.

Oh, this is super cool. I use Lua a lot in SotW (not as much as DarkGod does in ToME, but I basically separate any code that's specific to the game world itself and use Lua for that) and love it. It's very minimal, but practical and enjoyable in a way that most other languages aren't.

I used C++ this time and it worked fine, it's not perfect but I can nicely encapsulate the manual memory management parts of it. I guess what I'm saying is that the received wisdom of Unix greybeards is not always universally applicable and DarkGod showed you can use whatever language you like.
