I’m gonna have to do business with the warlord the captures the local datacenter’s gas powered turbines! And of course the whole enterprise is gonna be wrecked by some mercurial warlord who captures the natural gas supply. Anyone want to bankroll my next Apple TV movie?

The disappointing thing is you don't even need to steal a truck. You can build out a whole datacenter for free by camping outside a datacenter's dumpster.

I've probably scrapped about $1m USD in tech and materials in the last 2 years just by myself.

I hate every minute of it.
Dude, It's Great in This Dumpster!

Elon could build a solar power station himself to charter his stunts.

He *chooses* to burn fossil fuels.

-were used a lot like AWS or other cloud computing datacenters are used for. I.E. banking transactions, insulin trackers, online web portals, etc. If they were hosting bot farms, they were only a small portion of said datacenter's use-case.

If something tries to confirm your biases, question it.

Doesn't seem like that needs to be the case for people, even Americans, to notice and start opposing it.

In fact, nearly all of a datacenter’s damage is a function of doing it fast and dirty. A well designed datacenter can use very little water and be a grid asset (storage), and these assholes are MADE out of money so that’s not even an excuse. They just can’t be arsed.

*STOMP*
The datacenter's primary wing disintegrated, reduced to a mere pile of rubble. The sterile, blinking rhythm of the server farm vanished in a heartbeat, swallowed by the sudden, violent glow of burning diesel casting a radiating glow across his massive paw.

1: “Hacking a datacenter” is what happens any time a website gets hacked. Where do you think websites are stored?
2: “terabytes of data” is a lot for an individual user, it is not a lot for an institution.
3: Why would power companies shut off the power? The datacenter’s using just as much as usual.

Depends on the model, but small ones can be run on pretty normal computers. Midrange ones hardware that's selected for running LLMs (which hobbyists do all the time). Large ones need datacenter hardware, but not necessarily anything like a datacenter's worth of it

The threat was never "runs on your PC." It's weights (a file, files move) spun up on rented cloud GPUs, or a model already loose inside a datacenter's own hardware. The compute cost is the actual constraint, which is the argument for guarding it, not against worrying. You dunked on a soundbite.

SpaceX's Starcloud targets an 8-year ROI breakeven on orbital compute per their filings: solar uptime near 100% (vs ~50% terrestrial) vs ~$3-5k/kg launch cost. Risk: thermal dissipation in vacuum caps rack density at roughly 1/10th of a ground datacenter's.

counter counterpoint: you have a datacenter’s worth of computer equipment in your office and a hardware store’s worth of woodworking equipment in your shop, i don’t want to hear shit about total goods weight from you

Stuff being bad doesn't mean other stuff isn't bad. Just because bombs are made and dropped on people doesn't make steak or genAI unproblematic.

We have a different definition of costs!

The city had denied the datacenter's permit to operate but it operated anyway. The leak wasn't discovered for a while because it's in a rural area on property that's fenced and locked. It was actually almost 4 million gallons of water leaked.

The city had denied the datacenter's permit but then didn't follow up and it operated anyway, leading to what they believe was a faulty fire prevention system leaking nearly 4 million gallons of water. The property is behind locked chainlink fence and wasn't easily accessible during the incident

It was a fucking fire hydrant leaking on the property, not anything related to the datacenter's operation lmao jesus christ Glonzo is painfully stupid.
An Oklahoma data center using water-cooling technology just wasted over 3 million gallons of water during a massive pipe burst.
