Yep, I'm gonna wrap the pipe with insulation before I fill the hole back in. I also use a heat cable on stuff like this during freezes cuz I had the vacuum breaker shutoff valve blow in 2021 and we're not going through that again.

Automatic de icing cycles have been done long before electronic controls. You set a mechanical timer for the middle of the night when no one will open it. There are electric heating elements in the evaporator that energize and will melt the ice pretty quickly.

My first thought when I read about icing was that planes have had de-icing systems for so long that ought not be an issue, but also, if the icing was severe and sudden, in a thunderstorm. It could simply be too much for the Lear 60, which is quite small.

Yes, the audio stated they had clear ice, but were 'managing it,' which means the de ice was on, or thought to be on. The de-icing has a certain capacity, it's likely the conditions suddenly exceeded the capacity by a considerable margin. The time between the managing it and liquid precipitation
